This role will lead coverage of breaking and developing news stories, both editorially and logistically, for the newsroom and field crews. The Assignment Editor will research, coordinate, pitch, and implement coverage of breaking news, continuing coverage, and community stories, requiring the ability to quickly assess needs, find and book experts, and collaborate with website, social media, and streaming teams. The role also involves initiating and maintaining communication with affiliates and News Channel counterparts, monitoring news through social media, and establishing and maintaining working story and contact files.

Requirements

  • Working Knowledge of Police Scanners
  • Working knowledge of live production/transmission
  • Able to work independently and as a member of a team
  • Ability to clearly communicate ideas and status updates to both editorial and technical teams
  • Bachelor’s degree in Journalism or Communications
  • At least 4 years’ experience including: work in a broadcast news environment, coordinating assignments, generating story ideas
  • Two years’ experience as an Assignment Editor
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Programs including Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Outlook
  • Must have the ability to work any of a 24 x 7 shift including the potential for weekends, holidays and overnights
  • Must be over 18 years old
  • Must have unrestricted work authorization to work in the United States
  • Must be willing to work in Philadelphia, PA
  • This position is required to be performed full-time from an NBCUniversal-designated worksite.

Responsibilities
