About The Position

KOAT, the ABC and CBS affiliates in Albuquerque, New Mexico, is hiring an Assignment Editor to help cover news in the community and deliver stories to viewers. The role calls for a take-charge approach to breaking news, the ability to identify distinctive enterprise stories, and oversight of news coverage. The Assignment Editor is a newsroom leader who supports the gathering and planning of content and helps ensure information is distributed across broadcast and digital platforms. This position reports to the Assistant News Director.

Requirements

Experience listening to police scanners.
Experience with digital platforms, especially social media, including monitoring multiple social media accounts to gather content and communicate with newsmakers.
Working knowledge of FTP or willingness to learn how to FTP video to other stations.
Familiarity with local newsgathering technology and terminology.
Ability to maintain professional working relationships with newsmakers.
Ability to gather information from multiple sources simultaneously and quickly distribute it to anchors, reporters, producers, and digital editors.
Ability to remain calm and level-headed during breaking news situations.
Willingness to work a variety of shifts, including weekends and nights.

Responsibilities

Listen to multiple police scanners covering more than a dozen agencies throughout the market.
Gather and organize press releases, emails, phone calls, and viewer tips, and determine which may yield compelling newscast content.
Assist news management with content gathering and planning.
Assist producers, digital editors, and reporters with story gathering.
Track crews in the field and communicate with them.
Furnish content and post it to digital platforms, including sending push alerts and posting to Twitter and Facebook.
