About The Position

The Assignment Editor monitors public safety scanners, fixed cameras, social media, and email while answering phones to keep the newsroom informed of significant events and breaking news. This role assists the news team in developing story ideas and gathering information. The Assignment Editor is responsible for assigning and coordinating logistics between news crews and live trucks, as well as coordinating live and tape feeds from trucks and other transportation for live broadcasts. Developing and maintaining contacts with law enforcement, fire departments, local government, and community organizations is crucial for staying updated on current events. The position also involves coordinating daily logistics and dispatching crews and multimedia journalists to breaking news, and assisting producers, reporters, and web producers with story calls, setups, and follow-ups. Additionally, the Assignment Editor will write and publish basic story details to KOB.com as needed and complete other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Bachelors in Journalism, Communications or related field; or equivalent work experience
• At least one year of assignment desk experience
• Exceptional communication skills.
• Advanced critical thinking skills.
• Ability to work in a high pressure environment and with various personalities.
• Highly organized, detail oriented, knowledge of news and news-makers.
• Computer literacy required.
• Must be able to make good decisions quickly; able to articulate choices and communicate those choices to other news department and station employees.
• Must have good writing skills including grammar and spelling.

Responsibilities

• Coordinate daily logistics and dispatches crews and multimedia journalists to breaking news.
• Assist producers, reporters, web producer with story calls, setups and follow ups.
• Write and publish basic story details to KOB.com as needed.
• Complete other duties as assigned.
