About The Position

The Assessment & Referral Counselor assists clients who are in psychiatric/mental health crisis by assessing the current situation and making appropriate referrals for the lowest level of care consistent with what the client's needs are. Referrals or treatment recommendations are made through the collaborative efforts of team members and in accordance with facility approved level of care criteria. Requirements

  • Master's degree in Social Work or related field; or be a Registered Nurse licensed in the State of Indiana
  • Minimum of two (2) years of direct clinical experience in a psychiatric or mental health setting, with direct experience in patient assessment, family motivation, treatment planning, and communication with external review organizations
  • Good listening and communication skills
  • Good organizational skills
  • Good time management skills
  • Have the ability to work independently

Responsibilities

  • Incoming inquiry calls and walk-ins
  • Crisis Intervention
  • Follow any applicable EMTALA regulations and utilize emergency techniques as needed to stabilize emergent medical conditions
  • Provide clients, families/concerned persons, and referral sources an opportunity to discuss financial concerns or insurance questions
  • Triage as needed
  • Facilitate open discussion with clients, families, and referral sources about their feelings
  • Completes assessments and provides referrals if necessary
  • Conduct insurance pre-certifications for inpatient admission to the facility, properly document admissions, and distribute all assessment/admission paperwork appropriately
  • Interface closely with Medical Staff, Treatment Team, and Managed Care Organizations
