About The Position

The Backshop Production Manager is responsible for leading daily manufacturing operations across multiple production departments to ensure the safe, efficient, and on-time manufacture of aerospace and defense products. This role provides direct supervision and leadership for all backshop operations while ensuring compliance with quality standards, customer specifications, and regulatory requirements. The Backshop Production Manager drives continuous improvement initiatives, develops production personnel, maintains production schedules, and promotes a culture of safety, quality, accountability, and operational excellence. Requirements

  • Must have good leadership skills and be capable of training team members.
  • Experience with ERP/MRP systems.

  • 5–8 years of manufacturing experience in aerospace, defense, or other highly regulated industries.
  • Minimum 3-5 years of supervisory or leadership experience.
  • Experience managing multiple manufacturing disciplines simultaneously.
  • Ability to speak and understand basic safety and manufacturing instructions.
  • Ability to add and subtract decimals out to 4 places.
  • Ability to multiply and divide with 10’s & 100’s.
  • Authorization to work in the United States.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise daily manufacturing activities across Electrical Assembly, Paint, Plating, Deburring, Testing, Welding, Mechanical Assembly, Sheet Metal, and PCM Fill departments.
  • Execute production schedules to meet customer delivery commitments.
  • Coordinate manpower, equipment, materials, and priorities to maximize throughput.
  • Monitor production metrics including productivity, schedule attainment, efficiency, scrap, and rework.
  • Resolve production issues that impact quality, safety, or delivery.
  • Conduct production meetings and communicate departmental priorities.
  • Responsible for backshop team member efficiency.
  • Ensure all backshop production activities comply with ISO9001/ AS9100, customer requirements, engineering specifications, and applicable military and aerospace standards.
  • Enforce workmanship standards and process discipline.
  • Partner with Quality Engineering to investigate nonconformances and implement corrective actions.
  • Ensure proper documentation, traceability, and production records are maintained.
  • Lead Lean Manufacturing and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Identify opportunities to reduce waste, improve quality, and increase productivity.
  • Coordinate with Engineering, Quality, Planning, Supply Chain, Maintenance, and Program Management.
  • Support new product introductions and engineering changes.
  • Assist in capacity planning and resource allocation.
  • Track, resolve & escalate production risks and recommend solutions.
  • Directly manage team structure consisting of area leads or supervisors across multiple buildings.
  • Maintain consistent presence on the production floor to drive execution and accountability.
  • Conduct & sustain Tier 1 meetings within each functional area and escalate items as needed to Tier 2 meetings.
  • Drive accountability to daily production targets and commitments.
  • Adhere to all safety policies and ensuring proper eye and hearing protection is used by all team members under their supervision.
  • Perform all functions of the job while adhering to established quality policies and procedures.
