About The Position

The Utah State Office of Rehabilitation (USOR), a Division of the Department of Workforce Services (DWS), is seeking a motivated and highly skilled ASL/English Interpreter to join the Utah Interpreter Program in Taylorsville, Utah at the Division of Services of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DSDHH) office. The mission of Workforce Services is to strengthen Utah’s communities by connecting the workforce to new opportunities and providing services to individuals and families in need. Today, more than 2,200 Workforce Services employees assist individuals in preparing for and finding jobs, meeting workforce needs of Utah businesses, administering temporary assistance, and providing economic data and analysis. Through a collaborative approach, the department has served millions of Utahns and has become a leader on several statewide initiatives. These include intergenerational poverty, homelessness, affordable housing, supporting refugees, helping rural communities, serving veterans and individuals with disabilities, and getting Utahns trained and back to work.

Requirements

  • Utah Professional Level Certification or a certification from the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf
  • A flexible approach to interpreting, teaming, and scheduling
  • Intimate knowledge of Deaf culture, the RID-NAD Code of Professional Conduct, and Utah laws related to the provision of interpreting services
  • Outstanding communication and problem solving skills

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working with Deaf interpreters
  • Experience presenting training, workshops, and mentoring
  • Familiarity with tactile and/or ProTactile interpreting

Responsibilities

  • Interprets between ASL and Spoken English users
  • Maintains calendars; schedules and coordinates appointments
  • Provides assistance and/or on-the-job training
  • Develops and presents consumer awareness information and education material to consumers and other special interest groups
  • Attends training and meetings as required
  • Administers/conducts tests or examinations and/or evaluates results
  • Mentors emerging, newly certified, and advanced level interpreters
