About The Position

City Theatre Company, Pittsburgh’s leading professional theater dedicated to new plays, seeks to hire an ARTISTIC PRODUCER. This full-time, exempt senior level position will be housed in the artistic department and will report to the theatre’s Artistic Director (Clare Drobot). A key position in the artistic department, the Artistic Producer will work closely with the Artistic Director, Managing Director, and Production Manager on season programming, line producing, creative team collaboration, new play development, and ensuring City Theatre’s broad engagement with Pittsburgh’s artistic community. City Theatre’s artistic department is responsible for all artistic planning, programming, and producing at the theatre. This includes five subscription productions, the Young Playwrights Festival, the annual Momentum Festival of new work, resident companies, presented work, and more. The role will collaborate closely with the education and community engagement departments to ensure that all of City’s producing work is deeply connected to the company’s mission, vision, and values, and actively engaged with the broader Pittsburgh community.

Requirements

  • At least five (5+) years of professional experience working in a theatre or theatre adjacent field, with an emphasis on producing and artistic practice.
  • A working knowledge of the Pittsburgh and national theatre communities
  • Ability to collaborate with team members from a wide variety of backgrounds, workstyles, and professional experiences.
  • A keen eye for attention to detail, administrative organization, and the ability to self-start and multitask, and remain organized.
  • A passion for collaboration and exploring the intersections of art, community, and education; commitment and ability to advocate for “radical hospitality” across the organization.
  • Proficiency with the Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Excel, Microsoft Word)
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends, reflective of the dynamic schedule of the theatre.
  • While some work-from-home opportunities are possible, the primary duties require in-person presence. Therefore, must be local to Pittsburgh upon commencement of full-time duties.

Responsibilities

  • Working closely with Artistic Director on season planning, including the evaluation of scripts, research of the local and national field, as well as fostering collaborative relationships with writers, directors, and other producing theater companies.
  • Working in a line-producing capacity on all mainstage shows, in close collaboration with Artistic Director and Production Manager. Hires and processes contracts for dialect coaches, fight directors, intimacy directors, dramaturgs and other assorted artistic personnel as needed and participates in selection of directors, designers, and other creative team members.
  • Being available throughout each rehearsal process as an advocate and collaborator for creative teams. This position is key in City providing a supportive and rigorous environment for the creation of live theater.
  • Attending design runs, technical rehearsals and previews, participating in notes sessions and supporting the full arc of the production process.
  • Maintaining artistic department budgets and working closely with Production Manager to ensure that each production is successful within the budgetary and time parameters of allocated resources.
  • Serving as the key artistic point person for City Presents partnerships and working closely with Director of Operations on any artistic needs of rental partners.
  • Working with Director of Operations and Production Manager on season contracting needs related to creative team building.
  • Note: Depending on the applicant’s artistic practice, the position may include performing, directing, and/or dramaturgical opportunities as an artist on staff.
  • In partnership with the Artistic Director, serving as a line producer for all the theatre’s new play development work including its Momentum Festival, assembling teams, overseeing casting, and aligning departmental calendars and space.
  • Processing all reading contracts and various union forms
  • Supports Artistic Director in researching, recruiting, and establishing relationships with writers, directors and performers to help expand City’s new work development pipeline
  • Serving as primary point person for all the organization’s casting, working closely with the Artistic Associate, including generation of lists, overseeing auditions, and working with out-of-town casting directors for any national casting needs.
  • Attending productions, readings, and artistic events both locally and nationally to meet and identify artists for the theater’s main stage programming needs.
  • Developing an active external presence in the Pittsburgh community fostering connections with artists, community partners, and organizations whose values align with those of City Theatre.
  • Attending donor events and community gatherings as a representative of City Theatre.
  • Hosting talkbacks and ancillary programming events in conjunction with productions and new play development initiatives.
  • Working closely with Artistic Associate on the City Connects program, supporting partnerships, fostering collaboration with production needs, and serving as an organization point person.
  • Representing the Artistic staff both internally (collaborating and communicating with other departments) and externally (as a public face for audience members, donors, and artists).
  • Serving as the primary point of contact for logistics for the artistic department for marketing needs including coordinating artist engagement and schedules with the marketing director.
  • Engaging in strategic planning and other senior staff level planning and initiatives.
