About The Position

Metrolinx, a commercially oriented agency of the Ministry of Transportation (Ontario), was created to improve the coordination and integration of transportation services in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area. Our mandate is to get you where you need to go better, faster, easier. We are committed to making this happen and have been called upon to deliver the largest transit capital expansion program in Canadian history, which includes the delivery of Subway expansion program, the GO expansion program, the Rapid Transit program, and transit-oriented communities projects, in addition to operating existing GO Transit, UP Express and PRESTO. To support this massive undertaking, Metrolinx has a dynamic, forward-thinking, nationally recognized Legal Services department, encompassing approximately 80 professionals practicing diverse areas of law, including: corporate/commercial, real estate, construction/infrastructure, employment and labour, indigenous relations, dispute resolution and litigation, and privacy. Metrolinx currently is operating under a hybrid work model, with the Legal Services Office working at 97 Front Street West. Please note this may be subject to change. Our award-winning Legal Services Office department is looking for two (2) Articling Students to join our team for the 2027-2028 articling term cycle. Reporting to a Director in the Legal Services department, the Articling Students will be expected to perform professional legal work and provide timely, cost-effective, and results-oriented legal assistance and representation on a variety of general and specialty legal issues.

Requirements

  • Qualified LLB and/or JD Program student graduate in good standing with an accredited Law School, or candidates who have received their certificate of qualification issued by the National Committee on Accreditation (NCA).
  • Registered as a candidate in the licensing process under the Law Society of Ontario.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a keen eye for detail and the ability to multi-task and meet deadlines within a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, with the ability to structure information clearly, concisely, and logically.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Interest in public sector work and the delivery of Metrolinx’s mandate issued by the Ministry of Transportation (Ontario).
  • All applicants must be legally entitled to work in Canada.

Responsibilities

  • Draft and review legal documents, policies, procedures, position papers, reports, correspondence, and memoranda, as required, on a wide variety of legal issues.
  • Conduct legal research on a diverse range of legal matters (including corporate/commercial, real estate, labor and employment, indigenous relations, corporate governance, and dispute resolution and litigation) as directed by legal counsel, and provide legal assistance on the interpretation of same.
  • Recommend and oversees amendments to existing policies and procedures, as a result of relevant legislative or regulatory changes.
  • Attend meetings and hearings, and participate in a variety of legal transactions.
  • Respond to inquiries and collaborate with the legal counsel on a wide range of legal files and issues.

Benefits

  • Contribution to Bar Exam Fee: $410.00
  • Education Stipend: $3,000.00 upon commencement of your articling period and $1,975.00 in January of your articling year
