Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Art Therapy from an accredited institution with completion of a supervised art therapy practicum (minimum 100 hours) and internship (minimum 600 hours).
  • Experience working with children and adolescents and in a hospital setting, preferred.
  • Experience in the application of a variety of art modalities (drawing, painting, sculpture, and other media) for assessment and treatment, preferred.
  • Undergraduate degree in Fine Arts or Art Education preferred.
  • Art Therapy Registration (ATR) and/or Art Therapy Board Certification (AT-BC) highly desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Organizes and executes individual and group art therapy interventions for patients receiving ambulatory and inpatient services.
  • Assesses the developmental and psychosocial needs of patients.
  • Using art as a tool, provides services that reduce stress, increase adaptive coping, protect and enhance developmental integrity by offering opportunities to play, learn and interact with others in an emotionally and physically safe environment.
  • Provides information, education and support to patients and families to cope with hospitalization, illness, medical experiences, normal growth and development, and end of life care.
  • Prioritizes patient care needs on a daily basis through consults and individual assessments.
  • Collaborates with other members of the healthcare team to plan course of treatment and evaluate patient needs and abilities.
  • Documents clinical interventions and significant patient information in the electronic medical record.
  • Maintains necessary supplies and equipment.
  • Provides guidance and training to Child Life Services students, residents, nurses, other health care professionals, and volunteers.
  • Presents educational in-services to health care professionals and to the community regarding art therapy in the healthcare setting.
