About The Position

The classroom teacher is responsible for administering and developing subject-specific assessments, advising parents on student progress, assessing student progress towards standards, and collaborating with instructional staff and community resources to improve student outcomes. The role involves counseling students, demonstrating and differentiating instructional methods, instructing students to improve academic success, managing student behavior, and monitoring students in various educational environments. The teacher will also participate in meetings and professional development, prepare written materials, report incidents, and respond to emergency situations. Additionally, the teacher will direct teacher assistants and other support staff, perform related duties as assigned, and support other classroom teachers. A key aspect of the role is demonstrating and modeling the integration of technology in all curriculum areas and pursuing professional technology development.

Requirements

  • Requires a Bachelor's degree and endorsement in the grade/subject taught with a valid Tennessee certificate
  • Must be highly qualified
  • Must be physically and mentally able to perform the responsibilities and duties of the position
  • Requires the ability to review, classify, categorize, prioritize, and/or analyze data. Includes exercising discretion in determining data classification, and in referencing such analysis to established standards for the purpose of recognizing actual or probable interactive effects and relationships.
  • Requires the ability to provide guidance, effective supervision, assistance, and/or interpretation to others regarding the application of procedures and standards to specific situations.
  • Requires the ability to operate, maneuver and/or control the actions of equipment, machinery, tools, and/or materials used in performing essential functions.
  • Requires the ability to utilize a wide variety of reference, descriptive, and/or advisory data and information.
  • Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division; the ability to calculate decimals and percentages; the ability to utilize principles of fractions; and the ability to interpret graphs.
  • Requires the ability to apply principles of rational systems, philosophies, laws, regulations, and procedures; to interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule form; and to exercise independent judgment to adopt or modify methods and standards to meet variations in assigned objectives.
  • Requires the ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness and creativity in situations involving evaluation of information against measurable or verifiable criteria and the goals and priorities of planning and development programs.

Responsibilities

  • Administers and develops subject specific assessments for the purpose of assessing student competency levels and/or developing individual learning plans
  • Advises parents and/or legal guardians of student progress for the purpose of communicating expectations, student's achievements, developing methods for improvement, and/or reinforcing classroom goals in the home environment
  • Assesses student progress towards standards, expectations, and/or goals for the purpose of providing feedback to students, parents and administration
  • Collaborates with instructional staff, other school personnel, parents, and a variety of community resources for the purpose of improving the overall quality of student outcomes, achieving established classroom objectives in support of the school improvement plan
  • Counsels students for the purpose of improving performance, health status, problem solving techniques and a variety of personal issues
  • Demonstrates and differentiates methods required to perform classroom and/or subject specific assignments for the purpose of providing an effective program that addresses individual student requirements
  • Instructs students for the purpose of improving their success in academics through a defined course of study
  • Manages student behavior for the purpose of providing a safe and optimal learning environment
  • Monitors students in a variety of educational environments (e.g. classroom, school grounds, hallways, restrooms, field trips, etc.) for the purpose of providing a safe and positive learning environment
  • Participates in a variety of meetings and professional development activities for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform functions
  • Prepares a variety of written materials (e.g. grades, lesson plans following scope and sequence, correspondence with parents and students, examinations and quizzes, attendance, anecdotal records, etc.) for the purpose of documenting student progress and meeting mandated requirements
  • Reports incidents (e.g. fights, suspected child abuse, suspected substance abuse, harassment, zero tolerance offenses etc.) for the purpose of maintaining personal safety of students, providing a positive learning environment and adhering to state law and board policies
  • Responds to emergency situations for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns and/or directing to appropriate personnel for resolution
  • Directs teacher assistants, student teachers, instructional assistants, volunteers and/or student workers for the purpose of providing an effective classroom program and addressing the needs of individual students
  • Performs other related duties, as assigned, for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit
  • Supports other classroom teachers for the purpose of assisting them in the implementation of established curriculum and/or individual student plans
  • Demonstrates and models on a regular basis the integration of technology in all curriculum areas
  • Follows a plan for professional technology development and actively seeks out opportunities to grow professionally
  • Performs other duties as assigned
