About The Position

The Art Studios Technician provides technical support for faculty and students in the Art Department and all other educational activities as needed. This role involves resolving complex problems concerning the usage of machinery, electrical equipment, and hand tools. The technician will also provide instructional support through equipment set-ups, displays, demonstrations, and other learning activities. Duties include inventory control, storekeeping, purchasing and distribution of materials and equipment, and the operation, calibration, survey, maintenance, and repair of technical and electrical equipment. The position requires working with mechanical and electrical tools and machinery, including wood shop, ceramics kilns, and sculpture areas, and with materials such as plaster, paint products, cleaning agents, and glazes.

Requirements

  • Equivalent to two years of experience providing instructional support services for a unit or discipline in the Arts OR equivalent to two years of college with 16 semester units in courses involving extensive use of materials, supplies, or equivalent and in Art or related discipline which may be substituted for one year of required experience OR equivalent to four years of college with 16 semester units in courses involving extensive use of materials, supplies, or equipment in Art or related discipline.
  • Knowledge of principles of providing support services.
  • Knowledge of common principles, methods, and techniques.
  • Knowledge of materials, supplies, and equipment and their uses in Art or related discipline.
  • Knowledge and experience for traditional, experimental, and new technology as required for various instructional techniques.
  • Knowledge and experience to survey, maintain, and repair technical and electrical equipment.
  • Knowledge of industry standards for safety procedures on all power equipment and power tools, including but not limited to hand tools.
  • Ability to evaluate the materials and supplies used.
  • Ability to learn to adjust and make minor repairs to equipment and hand tools.
  • Ability to plan activities and prepare schedules.
  • Ability to use methods, techniques, and skills related to the Art discipline.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs.
  • Demonstrated interest and/or ability in working in a multicultural/multiethnic environment.
  • Must reside in the State of California.

  • Oversees and instructs safe operation of equipment, including the wood shop for students and faculty.
  • Supervises and instructs safe use of chemicals such as paint products and cleaning agents.
