About The Position

The Armed Security Officer is responsible for ensuring the safety and security for everyone and property within the facilities of Ellis Medicine. This role requires compliance with The New York State Security Guard Act and enforcement of Security, Parking, and hospital policies and procedures.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent required.
  • Valid NYS Drivers License.
  • Unexpired NYS Armed Security Guard License (includes firearms training and a valid NYS pistol permit).
  • Must be able to meet, pass and maintain New York State Security Guard Act requirements.
  • Must be able to get a “transaction number” from the Department of State before starting employment.
  • Must be able to pass criminal background checks by way of fingerprinting.
  • Must complete 47 hour armed security guard course.
  • Must complete 16 hour on the job specific training course within 30 days of employment start.
  • Must complete annual training requirements set by the Ellis Medicine, Department of Criminal Justice Services and New York Department of State.
  • Must complete an “Employee Statement” that will be sent to the Department of State.
  • If unlicensed, must be able to pass requirements within 90 days.
  • Must be reported on the “Employee Notification Form” to add and remove employed security officers from the Department of Criminal Justice System, “Association”.
  • Must be able to pass a physical examination and be capable of arduous physical exertion and be capable to withstand exposure to unusual or inclement weather.
  • Actual physical contact may be necessary with persons to maintain order.
  • Should be able to push/pull 25 lb., lift/move 15 lb. from floor to table.
  • Be able to perform moderately difficult manual manipulations such as using a keyboard, writing, and filing for extended periods of time.
  • Must be able to perform tasks which require hand-eye coordination such as data entry, typing and using photo copiers.
  • Mobility requirements may include the ability to sit at a computer terminal or workstation for a prolonged period of time in addition to being able to squat, stand and walk for a reasonable length of time and distance.
  • Sensory requirements include the ability to articulate and comprehend the spoken English language in addition to being able to read the English language.
  • The position requires being able to work in inclement weather.
  • This position also includes situations that could be physical/combative situations with patients/visitors which can require the use of restraining and hands on situations.
  • Maintains the department’s equipment in a safe manner.
  • Operates the department’s equipment including motor vehicles in a safe manner.
  • Demonstrates proper and safe use of all assigned equipment and maintains proficiency in same, including firearm, pepper gel, etc.

Nice To Haves

Responsibilities

  • Ensuring the safety and security of all persons and property within the facilities of Ellis Medicine.
  • Providing the Director, Manager or Supervisor with pertinent information concerning the safety of its occupants.
  • Complying with and enforcing Security & Parking policies and procedures along with all hospital policies and procedures.
  • Performing all security/safety rounds/fixed post assignments utilizing departmental prescribed procedures; as well as utilizing training and experience as an Armed Security Guard/Law Enforcement Personnel to de-escalate workplace violence, mitigate threats and properly handle emotionally disturbed persons (EDP).
  • Patrolling facility to provide a safe environment for all persons and reporting unsafe conditions.
  • Assisting in response to Code Silver/Active shooter events collaborating with law enforcement response.
  • Investigating and reporting all security incidents, completing all appropriate logs and paperwork, and ensuring proper communications of incidents to appropriate staff.
  • Properly performing and documenting DETEX fire and security rounds.
  • Monitoring and operating the fire alarm system.
  • Assisting in bomb threat searches and investigations.
  • Securing a crime scene until appropriate authorities arrive.
  • Operating computers, programs, and CCTV surveillance system and other security equipment.
  • Properly handling and inventorying patient valuables and departmental cash escorts.
  • Maintaining and securing all accountable items, such as keys, radios, etc.
  • Accurately completing and maintaining the daily security logs, reports and related paperwork; Lost & Found, Storeroom.
  • Notifying appropriate staff of unusual occurrences that require immediate attention.
  • Responding to Code situations in a timely and appropriate manner and initiating or assisting control of the incident.
  • Monitoring Code 9.39 patients.
  • Responding to customer calls in a timely, courteous, and efficient manner, providing optimal customer service and documenting call information.
  • Communicating with patients, patients’ families, and staff to ensure safety, patient satisfaction and excellent customer service is provided.
  • Collaborating with other departments throughout the organization and participating in hospital related matters.
  • Providing on the job training to new employees.
  • Completing required training as assigned (i.e., hospital, departmental, health streams).
  • Complying with Hospital and department policies, work rules and requirements.
  • Adhering to patient privacy policies and procedures, maintaining confidentiality.
  • Adhering to the Making Ellis Exceptional (MEE) Behaviors & Standards, and initiating, promoting, and supporting change initiatives.
