About The Position

The Armed Security Officer is responsible for ensuring the safety and security for everyone and property within the facilities of Ellis Medicine. This role requires compliance with The New York State Security Guard Act and enforcement of security, parking, and hospital policies and procedures. The officer will perform security rounds, de-escalate workplace violence, mitigate threats, and handle emotionally disturbed persons. They will also assist in responding to emergencies like active shooters, investigate incidents, operate security equipment including CCTV, and manage valuables and departmental cash escorts. The position involves maintaining daily logs, responding to various code situations, and providing excellent customer service to patients, families, and staff. Collaboration with other departments and providing on-the-job training are also key aspects. The role demands adherence to all hospital and department policies, including patient privacy and confidentiality, and embracing the Making Ellis Exceptional (MEE) Behaviors & Standards.

Requirements

  • A high school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Valid NYS Driver’s License.
  • Unexpired NYS Armed Security Guard License (includes firearms training and a valid NYS pistol permit).
  • Must be able to meet, pass and maintain New York State Security Guard Act requirements.
  • Must be able to get a “transaction number” from the Department of State before starting employment.
  • Must pass criminal background checks by way of fingerprinting.
  • Must pass a 47-hour armed security guard course.
  • Must pass a 16-hour on-the-job specific training course within 30 days of employment start.
  • Must meet annual training requirements set by the Ellis Medicine, Department of Criminal Justice Services and New York Department of State.
  • Must complete an “Employee Statement” for the Department of State.
  • Must be able to pass a physical examination.
  • Capable of arduous physical exertion.
  • Capable of withstanding exposure to unusual or inclement weather.
  • Ability to push/pull 25 lb.
  • Ability to lift/move 15 lb. from floor to table.
  • Ability to perform moderately difficult manual manipulations such as using a keyboard, writing, and filing for extended periods.
  • Ability to perform tasks requiring hand-eye coordination such as data entry, typing, and using photo copiers.
  • Ability to sit at a computer terminal or workstation for a prolonged period.
  • Ability to squat, stand, and walk for a reasonable length of time and distance.
  • Ability to articulate and comprehend the spoken English language.
  • Ability to read the English language.
  • Ability to work in inclement weather.
  • Ability to handle physical/combative situations with patients/visitors requiring the use of restraining and hands-on techniques.

Nice To Haves

  • Associates Degree and/or completion of the Police Basic Training curriculum preferred.
  • 5 years Armed Security Guard experience or 5 years Healthcare/hospital security, or 5 years of Law Enforcement experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Ensuring the safety and security of all persons and property within the facilities of Ellis Medicine.
  • Providing pertinent information to the Director, Manager, or Supervisor concerning the safety of occupants.
  • Complying with and enforcing Security & Parking policies and procedures, along with all hospital policies and procedures.
  • Performing security/safety rounds and fixed post assignments, utilizing departmental procedures and training to de-escalate workplace violence, mitigate threats, and handle emotionally disturbed persons.
  • Patrolling the facility to ensure a safe environment and reporting unsafe conditions.
  • Assisting in response to Code Silver/Active shooter events by collaborating with law enforcement.
  • Investigating and reporting all security incidents, completing appropriate logs and paperwork, and ensuring proper communication of incidents.
  • Properly performing and documenting DETEX fire and security rounds.
  • Monitoring and operating the fire alarm system.
  • Assisting in bomb threat searches and investigations.
  • Securing a crime scene until appropriate authorities arrive.
  • Operating computers, programs, and CCTV surveillance systems and other security equipment.
  • Properly handling and inventorying patient valuables and departmental cash escorts.
  • Maintaining and securing all accountable items, such as keys and radios.
  • Accurately completing and maintaining daily security logs, reports, and related paperwork (Lost & Found, Storeroom).
  • Notifying appropriate staff of unusual occurrences requiring immediate attention.
  • Responding to Code situations in a timely and appropriate manner and initiating or assisting in incident control.
  • Monitoring Code 9.39 patients.
  • Responding to customer calls in a timely, courteous, and efficient manner, providing optimal customer service and documenting call information.
  • Communicating with patients, patients’ families, and staff to ensure safety, patient satisfaction, and excellent customer service.
  • Collaborating with other departments and participating in hospital-related matters.
  • Providing on-the-job training for new employees.
  • Completing required training as assigned.
  • Complying with hospital and department policies, work rules, and requirements.
  • Adhering to patient privacy policies and procedures and maintaining confidentiality.
  • Adhering to the Making Ellis Exceptional (MEE) Behaviors & Standards, and initiating, promoting, and supporting change initiatives.
  • Maintaining the department’s equipment in a safe manner.
  • Operating the department’s equipment, including motor vehicles, in a safe manner.
  • Demonstrating proper and safe use of all assigned equipment and maintaining proficiency, including firearms and pepper gel.

  • Pay is based on experience, skills, and education.
  • Exempt positions under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) will be paid within the base salary equivalent of the stated hourly rates.
  • The pay range may also vary within the stated range based on location.
