About The Position

The Armed Public Safety Officer patrols facilities and property, makes observations to detect unauthorized persons, activities, and unsafe conditions, and ensures life safety standards are maintained. This role involves maintaining appropriate communication with Supervisors, fellow Officers, the Security Operations Center, and Law Enforcement to report crimes, incidents, and safety-related irregularities. Officers will intervene in disputes using verbal de-escalation techniques to diffuse potentially violent situations involving patients, employees, or visitors. The position requires investigating and documenting incidents, controlling access to restricted areas, and verifying the admittance of authorized individuals. Responsibilities also include performing security services and dispatcher duties when assigned, participating in approved activities not directly related to security operations, and detaining unauthorized individuals in compliance with state and federal law. Officers are required to use force when appropriate to protect patients, staff, and visitors at an Emory Healthcare facility.

Requirements

• External candidates must have a minimum of two (2) consecutive years of armed security, military, or law enforcement experience within the last 7 years.
• Internal candidates must meet a minimum of eight (8) consecutive months as an Emory Public Safety Officer (PSO) to be considered.
• Possess a POST certification; OR Have been registered through a military (DD214 or current Military ID); OR All active, reserve, retired or honorable discharged military personnel will meet the licensing/certification requirement; OR Federal, state, or local licensing firearms certification (Department of Homeland Security, NASA, NRA, GBI, or Secretary of State).
• Must successfully complete the Basic Security Officer and Firearms course mandated by the Secretary of State within 3 months post-hire.
• Must be able to successfully complete training to carry non-lethal weapons such as a Taser (CED) and/or a baton within 3 months post-hire.
• Must possess a valid Driver's License.
• Must pass a psychological exam.
• Must obtain IAHSS Basic certification within 12 months.
• Obtain a BLS Certification within 12 months.
• Complete FEMA IS 100, 200, 700 & 800 within six (6) months.

Nice To Haves

• A clean driving record is not required, but applicants should have no recent history of serious traffic violations.

Responsibilities

• Maintains communication with Supervisors, fellow Officers, Security Operations Center, and Law Enforcement to report crimes, incidents, and safety-related irregularities.
• Intervenes in disputes using verbal de-escalation techniques to diffuse potentially violent patient, employee, or visitor situations.
• Investigates and documents incidents, including safety hazards, incidents, and criminal activities, for Public Safety Leadership.
• Controls access to restricted organizational properties and verifies the admittance of authorized individuals.
• Escorts people/property to desired destinations when safety is a concern.
• Assists with parking and security during special events and provides visitors with directions and security information.
• Performs security services and dispatcher duties when assigned.
• Participates in approved activities not directly related to Security operations, such as transport and release of bodies from the morgue, patient escort, elevator recall checks, monthly fire extinguisher, panic alarm, and intercom checks, and special event setups.
• Interviews and investigates individuals involved in suspicious or illegal activities.
• Detains unauthorized individuals in compliance with state and federal law.
• Uses force when appropriate to protect patients, staff, and visitors at an Emory Healthcare facility.
