About The Position

This position is responsible for supervising 70-80 bus drivers and assistants, providing support to assigned schools and geographic areas, and acting as the Transportation liaison with schools. The role involves responding to bus accidents or severe discipline issues, supporting Transportation Annual Road-E-O and recognition celebrations, and enforcing safety and Transportation best practices. The supervisor will also act as the Transportation Supervisor in his/her absence. The position is responsible for providing leadership, operation support, and organization of the daily activities of assigned transportation compound, schools, and geographic area. This includes managing the Summer Enrichment Program, regular Summer School, and athletics. The role involves tracking the status and location of spare buses, assigning bus parking slots, and enforcing bus lot rules. Specific duties include scheduling, routing, and bus assignments for all SPED routes, assisting parents and school administrators with daily problems and concerns, and evaluating the performance of assigned personnel twice a year. The supervisor will verify and approve driver hours and timesheets for payroll weekly, operate various office computer systems (EDULOG, Issue TRAK, Field Trip Manager, TAA, GPS, Camera Systems), and review/approve bus drivers, runs, and routes before the school year. The role also includes planning and conducting student and bus evacuations training, interviewing, hiring, and training bus assistants, and spot-checking buses for proper securing of equipment. The supervisor will investigate and resolve driver/student discipline reports and customer service complaints, ensure all runs are covered and on time, and establish/maintain a book of schedules for assigned schools. Enforcement of drug testing requirements (random and post-accident) is also a key responsibility. The role models nondiscriminatory practices and is responsible for investigating all bus and white fleet accidents for Newport News Public School. Additionally, the supervisor plans, coordinates, and ensures bus route and bus stop audits are conducted to standard and maintains, enforces, and develops all safety and training standards.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree (or equivalency)
  • Experience as a school bus driver
  • Ability to organize, lead and supervise a transportation compound and area
  • Ability to work with principal, school staff
  • Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
  • Thorough understanding of school transportation operations, safety, routing concepts and their applications
  • Demonstrated leadership, organization, human relations, and communications skills
  • Valid Virginia Driver’s License
  • Willingness to acquire a CDL with requisite school bus endorsement

  • Ensuring that all runs in his/her area are covered, run on time, and that resources are not being wasted
  • Establishing and maintaining a book of schedules for assigned schools in designated areas
  • Ensuring that drug testing requirements are enforced, both random and post-accident
  • Modeling nondiscriminatory practices in all activities
  • Investigating all bus and white fleet accidents for the entire Newport News Public School
  • Planning, coordinating and ensuring that bus route and bus stops audits are conducted to standard as required and documented
