About The Position

This employee performs a variety of duties directly supervising the food service program in 15 or more schools. The employee is expected to resolve most problems that arise in the operation of a school cafeteria. This position requires a broad knowledge of the School Meal program, food service, food production, customer service, sanitation, and safety. The Area Supervisor conducts regular kitchen inspections and assessments to ensure that Federal, State and Local regulations and policies are followed. Area Supervisor is responsible for recommending facility and equipment improvements, hiring and discipline of staff. They regularly interact with the school principal and staff and serve as a School Nutrition liaison.

Requirements

  • Considerable knowledge of food preparation, and standards of sanitation, and workplace safety.
  • Working knowledge of institutional food service equipment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Proven ability to provide leadership to others in a food service production and meal service environment.
  • Thorough understanding of nutrition and an awareness of materials for nutritional education for children and adults.
  • Working knowledge of requirements of federal, state, and local agencies governing Child Nutrition programs.
  • Ability to develop schedules for the use of personnel and material resources.
  • Ability to train personnel in equipment use and care, food production and presentation, sanitation, storage, and recordkeeping.
  • Ability to analyze situations and make firm decisions based on that analysis.
  • Knowledge and application of basic computer skills.
  • Ability to coordinate various activities in the preparation and serving process.
  • Ability to inventory and record information accurately.
  • Ability to work as a member of an organizational team.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships.
  • Bachelor’s degree in nutrition, food service, management, or related field and a minimum of 2 years’ experience in food industry, preferably in school food service.
  • Must be able to meet any certification criteria required by local, state, or federal authorities.

Responsibilities

  • Knowledge of food production and service.
  • Considerable knowledge of HACCP Plans in school cafeterias.
  • Applies prescribed quality standards and quantity controls.
  • Observes food preparation and line service to assure quality and proper presentation.
  • Maintains a constant check of conditions of sanitation and safety and makes needed corrections.
  • Provides on-the-job training in equipment use and care, food production and presentation, sanitation and Point of Sale software.
  • Strong personnel management and supervisory skills.
  • Evaluates performance of managers, teaches and guides.
  • Documents staff performance, does appraisals, and follow up.
  • Assists Manager with performance issues.
  • Provides information on food service program to students, parents, and school staff.
  • Responds to customer concerns and complaints in a professional manner.
  • Assists with maintenance of production equipment.
  • Liaison for School Nutrition and other school/auxiliary service departments.
  • Assists in the planning and production of special functions involving child nutrition program.
  • Acts in an on call capacity to handle emergency issues.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned by the Director and Assistant Director(s) of School Nutrition.
