About The Position

Wharton-Smith, Inc., a highly regarded General Contractor throughout the Southeast, is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Area Superintendent – Water/Wastewater. We are currently seeking someone who is willing to work in our corporate office in Sanford, FL. The Area Superintendent is responsible for providing oversight, leadership, and additional management support for regional projects assigned by the General Superintendent. This role also supports Pre-Construction Services activities, including design reviews and pre-bid jobsite visits. Area Superintendents are expected to manage their own assigned projects while also providing ongoing support, guidance, and oversight to regional projects as needed.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 15 years of construction or construction management experience, with demonstrated success delivering multimillion-dollar projects.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience as a Project Superintendent.
  • Proven leadership and supervisory experience managing and supporting field personnel.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to coordinate effectively with project teams, operations leadership, safety, HR, and regional management.
  • Ability and willingness to travel to regional project sites to review operations and support field management teams.
  • Current Competent Person training/certifications in: Trenching & Excavation, Scaffolding, Rigging, Confined Space, Fall Protection
  • Current OSHA 10-Hour certification required.
  • Proficient with computers and Microsoft Office products.
  • Ability to work effectively on active construction sites and in varying weather and environmental conditions.
  • Ability to safely perform the physical requirements of the position, including prolonged standing/walking, climbing, bending, kneeling, and occasionally lifting or moving up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to safely navigate uneven surfaces, ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, and other jobsite conditions.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management or a related field preferred.
  • First Aid and CPR certification preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor regional projects assigned by the General Superintendent.
  • Attend pre-job planning meetings.
  • Assist with creating and maintaining baseline project schedules.
  • Review work scopes to identify scope gaps and report changes in scope to the Project Manager.
  • Attend weekly team meetings and planning board update sessions when possible.
  • Attend subcontractor pre-task meetings when possible.
  • Assist with ongoing project scheduling and P6 schedule updates alongside the project team.
  • Review PCA’s with field management teams to identify issues, risks, and opportunities.
  • Review and assist in resolving field management challenges.
  • Report project issues and concerns to the General Superintendent or company management.
  • Periodically attend critical meetings with clients, engineers, subcontractors, and vendors.
  • Maintain positive working relationships with clients, engineers, subcontractors, and vendors.
  • Support field management teams in determining the most effective construction methods.
  • Monitor project quality and ensure all work is completed according to specifications.
  • Perform job progress reviews, completion inspections, and punch list reviews.
  • Assist with process start-ups and commissioning activities.
  • Monitor and assist with project closeout activities.
  • Verify that daily reports and other required documentation are completed accurately and submitted on time.
  • Assist HR/Recruiting with staffing needs on project.
  • Support the Company Equipment Department through the utilization of company-owned equipment whenever possible.
  • Assist with repairs and maintenance of company-owned equipment.
  • Ensure all safety policies and procedures are followed on assigned projects.
  • Coordinate required training with the Safety Department as needed.
  • Assist Pre-Construction Services by attending pre-bid jobsite visits and participating in plan reviews.
  • Participate in presentations and proposal preparation.
  • Participate in constructability reviews for Design-Build and CMAR projects.
  • Identify field staff training needs and coordinate with the General Superintendent to address development opportunities.
  • Participate in interviews for prospective field employees.
  • Support the development and mentoring of Superintendents I & II, Field Engineers, Foremen, and Craft Workers.
  • Conduct craft worker evaluations and assist with promotion recommendations.
  • Participate in teaching and supporting craft training programs.
  • Coordination with all regional Area Superintendents for cross BU staffing when needed.
  • Coordinates Regional Annual/Bi-Annual Superintendents Meetings.
