About The Position

The Area Coordinator (AC) is responsible for participating in the creation and implementation of the Housing department and division vision, mission, and goals. This role is dedicated to a student-centered approach, requiring initiative in reaching out and building relationships. The AC will collaboratively develop, design, and communicate department procedures, manuals, and protocols to ensure continuity. A key aspect of the role involves reviewing, refining, and implementing the department’s Community Development Model with a focus on student development theory and learning outcomes. The AC will advise Resident Advisors on creating and supporting floor communities, and provide developmental conversations and support for students' personal, emotional, social, academic, career, and health-related needs. This position serves as a resource for students, parents, and the UNE community, and will informally investigate, assess, and resolve interpersonal and community problems within the residence halls. The AC will work with the Director of Student Resolutions to interpret and enforce University and residence life policies. Additionally, the AC will select, train, supervise, and mentor Resident Advisors, and assume responsibility for summer project work, including supervising summer RA staff and participating in Summer Orientation. The role also involves supporting commuter students through supervision and coordination of special programs and events, planning educational programs, and hiring/supervising Commuter Life Mentors. The AC will participate in daily duty coverage on a rotational basis throughout the year, including holidays, and provide oversight for emergency situations in collaboration with campus partners, with appropriate follow-up. Regular office hours and coverage are expected, particularly during summer months and breaks. Collaboration with campus partners on campus-wide events is also a component of this role.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Student Affairs, Higher Education, or a related field is required.
  • Demonstrated knowledge or experience working effectively within a residence life department.
  • Ability to meet deadlines, take initiative, and independently manage complex assignments.
  • Strong commitment to teamwork and collaboration.
  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral), with the ability to engage a variety of audiences including students, parents, faculty, staff, and community members.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical abilities.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with a wide range of University personnel and external partners.
  • Experience facilitating training sessions and workshops.
  • Willingness to participate in a duty rotation for emergency response and policy enforcement.
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends as required.
  • Must live on campus and maintain high visibility in residence halls, dining areas, and campus events.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree preferred, or a combination of education and experience with comparable knowledge and skills.
  • Experience in supervising students and/or advising student clubs/organizations is highly desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Informally investigate, assess and determine appropriate methods of resolving various interpersonal and community problems in the halls such as conflicts between roommates or floor mates, vandalism, etc.
  • Work with the Director of Student Resolutions to interpret and enforce University and residence life policies and procedures governing student behavior.
  • Select, train, supervise and mentor Resident Advisors (RA’s).
  • Brainstorm and assume responsibility for summer project work on behalf of the department.
  • Supervise summer RA staff as assigned.
  • Participate in Summer Orientation by presenting sessions, providing tours, and supporting activities.
  • Provide support to commuter students including but not limited to: Supervision and coordination a variety of special programs and events for commuters.
  • Plan and implement educational programs to support commuter life that provide focus on the developmental needs of this population
  • Hire and supervisor upper class students to serve as Commuter Life Mentors.
  • Participate in daily duty coverage on a rotational basis with the other AC’s throughout the entire calendar year including holidays.
  • In consultation with supervisors and in collaboration with other departments on and off campus, provide oversight for emergency situations (including physical, medical and psychiatric emergencies).
  • Provide appropriate follow up for emergency situations to include reconnecting with students, making referrals, working with parents, and communicating with student development theory and learning outcomes in mind.
  • Maintain regularly scheduled open office hours in area and main office coverage as needed particularly in the summer months and breaks.
  • Collaborate with campus partners in the planning and implementation of campus wide events and activities as needed.
  • Attendance at these events may be mandatory.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
