About The Position

The Area Coordinators are responsible for supporting the student experience within the residential community, working with 30 student staff members and essential housing operations processes and procedures. The Area Coordinators serve on the professional staff team for the Department of Residence Life ("the Department") and report to the Director of Residence Life and Dean of Students. Responsibilities include understanding and stewardship of the residents, staff, and physical facilities of their assigned area. They must possess excellent decision-making, organizational, and leadership skills. The Area Coordinators are to be active campus and community leaders for students. This is a full-time (12-month), exempt, live-in position. Normal hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Friday; however, hours will vary widely to include working evenings and weekends, contingent on activities and events and serving on the on-call rotation.

Requirements

  • A highly successful candidate will have a bachelor's degree
  • Show an aptitude for communicating effectively with a diverse population of students, faculty, and administrators.
  • Must be able to multi-task and respond effectively in high-stress situations or crises.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree preferred, in higher education or related fields
  • Preference will be provided for candidates with a demonstrated knowledge of the environment of a small, residential liberal arts campus

Responsibilities

  • Set measurable goals for residential programming and resident engagement
  • Maintain programming data and evaluate all residence hall programming
  • Manage residential life programming budgets
  • Develop connections with residents through daily informal interactions, scheduled meetings, and attending events and programs
  • Coordinate check-in, check-out, and all other residence hall openings and closings
  • Assist the other Area Coordinator in developing staff training initiatives and assist in facilitating fall, spring and ongoing staff training
  • Assist the other Area Coordinator in training staff on utilization of Jenzabar housing resources
  • Assist with returning resident lottery and new and transfer student room assignment processes.
  • Promote a safe and secure living environment, respond to student concerns, crises and emergencies as they arise, and work collaboratively with various campus and community partners on education and response to emergencies or crimes.
  • Address violations of residential life policies, student conduct, and the Honor Code
  • Serve as a student conduct officer for Civitas-related violations
  • Serve in live-in professional staff on-call rotation
  • Represent residence life philosophy and needs to other areas of the campus community
  • Work with other areas of student development and success to identify and sponsor programs
  • Identify students who appear "at risk" and report to support services
  • Respond to concerns raised by faculty, staff, students, and parents and respond accordingly
  • Support residential life team members in resolving hall challenges and roommate conflicts
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate intramural and student recreation programs
  • Develop guidelines for clean, well-maintained, and safe opportunities for recreation and fitness
  • Assess student recreation needs and develop goals and objectives to support new initiatives
  • Advise Valkyries Club and support other organizations associated with recreation activities
  • Explore opportunities to connect with NIRSA Region III institutions to strengthen and develop programs
  • Request funding, recruit, and train work-study recreation assistants when funded through FWS
  • Oversee management of student fitness and recreational areas
  • Participate actively as a member of the University to uphold all policies and service expectations
  • Participate in the University's emergency on-call rotation, attend weekly "huddle" meetings to review on-call responses, identify students of concern, and develop response plan
  • Serve as a departmental representative to campus-wide activities and programs and provide supervision when necessary
  • Serve on University committees and planning teams as appropriate (Converse Cares Team, strategic committees, etc.)
  • Utilize Jenzabar modules to advance the work of the University, with specific responsibility for maintaining housing and judicial records
  • Assist with the implementation of events that enhance the University community
  • Continually work to identify ways to enhance, grow, and revise strategies that foster students' academic, personal, and professional success
  • All other duties as needed to ensure the success of students and the University
