About The Position

In partnership with Compton Unified School District and Tomorrow’s Talent, DLR Group is offering a hands-on internship experience for high school students interested in architecture, engineering, and the design of the built environment. DLR Group is an integrated design firm that provides architecture, engineering, planning, and interior design services for projects around the world. The firm is committed to elevating the human experience through design, creating spaces that support learning, healthcare, community, and innovation. Through this internship, students will gain exposure to how real-world design teams collaborate to bring buildings and spaces to life. Interns will have the opportunity to learn from industry professionals, explore design concepts, and see how creative ideas transform into functional environments that serve communities.

The Architecture Intern will participate in a structured, hands-on learning experience designed to introduce high school students to careers in architecture, engineering, and design. Interns will gain exposure to the design process, observe how multidisciplinary teams collaborate on projects, and explore the tools and technologies used to create and develop buildings. Throughout the internship, students will participate in guided workshops, design activities, and discussions with professionals across the firm. Interns may observe project workflows, contribute to conceptual design exercises, and learn about sustainability, building systems, and construction considerations that influence the built environment.

This role focuses on exploration, learning, and professional development, allowing students to build foundational knowledge while gaining insight into potential career pathways within architecture and related industries.

In partnership with Compton Unified School District and Tomorrow’s Talent, DLR Group is offering a hands-on internship for high school students interested in architecture, engineering, and the design of the built environment. This program introduces students to how buildings and infrastructure are imagined, designed, engineered, and delivered. Interns will explore real project workflows, sustainable design concepts, building systems, and the collaborative roles that architects, engineers, and planners play in shaping spaces where people live, learn, and work. Through studio activities, site tours, design challenges, and professional mentorship, students gain foundational exposure that can lead to future internships, college pathways in architecture or engineering, or early opportunities within the A/E/I (Architecture, Engineering & Interior Design) industry.

Requirements

• Understand fundamentals of the built environment, including architectural concepts, structural and MEP systems, sustainability, and design technology.
• Explore A/E/I career paths through interactions with DLR Group architects, engineers, designers, and project managers.
• Strengthen awareness of sustainability, energy efficiency, accessibility, and building-code considerations in design.
• Gain introductory exposure to tools such as SketchUp, Revit, or other industry-standard design software.
• Build readiness for continued opportunities in design internships, CTE engineering coursework, or college programs.
• Develop professional skills including teamwork, communication, presentation, and design thinking.
• Are enrolled in a Compton USD high school and CTE pathway.
• Want to learn how buildings are designed, engineered, and constructed.
• Are willing to participate in hands-on activities and site experiences.
• Demonstrate curiosity, responsibility, and a willingness to learn — no prior experience required.
• Work Permit Required.

Responsibilities

• Participate actively in workshops, studio conversations, and hands-on design sessions led by DLR Group professionals.
• Demonstrate curiosity by asking questions, taking notes, and engaging in discussions about design processes and careers.
• Attend scheduled site visits or partnered facility tours to observe architecture and engineering concepts in the real world.
• Follow all safety instructions and adhere to required protocols during site or facility experiences.
• Contribute to design activities such as conceptual sketches, model building, or built-environment observations.
• Complete a final mini-project or reflection demonstrating understanding of architecture, engineering, and collaboration in the industry.
• Practice industry-aligned professional behaviors: punctuality, communication, collaboration, and teamwork.
• Engage respectfully with DLR Group staff and represent CUSD and Tomorrow’s Talent positively.
• During the internship, interns will present and speak on their experience and any projects that have been worked on.
• Be available for the internship duration (final schedule and hours will be provided once confirmed).
• Participate in orientation, group learning sessions, design activities, and any final showcase or reflection experience.
