DOWL is seeking a mid-level career Architectural Historian to join its Cultural Resources Management (CRM) team. This role focuses on preserving the architectural and cultural legacy of communities by contributing to public and private infrastructure projects. The Architectural Historian will serve as a subject matter expert in architectural history, delivering environmental documentation and compliance support under the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) and NEPA. Requirements

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel)
  • Intermediate understanding of technical fundamentals
  • Team player who is able to follow on large, complex projects and lead a small team on simple tasks
  • Strong understanding of scopes, schedules, and budgets
  • Able to predict and deliver individual tasks within a set level of effort
  • Able to consistently meet budget and schedule expectations on projects
  • Basic familiarity with NHPA, NAGPRA, NEPA, ARPA, and relevant state laws (e.g., SEPA, ORS)
  • Master's Degree in architectural history, historic preservation, or art history
  • 4 years of experience, or 3 years of experience with an advanced degree
  • Must meet Secretary of the Interior's Professional Qualification Standards
  • A valid driver's license and a clean driving record

  • Specialized training and real-world experience in Cultural Resources Management (CRM)

Responsibilities

  • Leading or supporting background research
  • Leading or supporting field surveys
  • Leading or supporting site documentation (especially for built environment resources)
  • Leading or supporting lab work
  • Preparing high-quality technical reports and NEPA/Section 106 documentation
  • Coordinating with federal, state, and tribal agencies and stakeholders
  • Writing proposals
  • Managing deliverables and field teams
  • Actively participating in public engagement and consultation meetings
  • Performing moderately complex design tasks independently
  • Effectively dividing projects into individual tasks
  • Leading technical effort on small projects
  • Performing quality control of basic deliverables
  • Producing Technical reports and memos independently
  • Producing Cultural Resource Baseline Reports independently
  • Producing Phase 1 and Phase 2 reports independently
  • Producing Section 106 documentation independently
  • Producing Other cultural documents as assigned independently
  • Producing Field studies and investigations independently
  • Resolving issues on small projects with clients
  • Attending client meetings and using situationally appropriate communication tools
  • Performing moderate to advanced levels of technical work on larger and more complex projects
  • Assisting with some project management tasks
  • Other duties as assigned
