About The Position

Michael Baker International is seeking an Architectural Historian II to join our Planning Practice team. This position is ideal for a motivated professional with strong research, writing, and analytical skills who is passionate about historic preservation and cultural resources. The successful candidate will support a variety of projects involving field surveys, archival research, historic resource evaluations, technical report preparation, and environmental documentation throughout California. Our Planning professionals partner with residents, businesses, developers, educational and medical organizations, state and local governments, military organizations, and federal agencies to plan for the future of communities and institutions. We focus on improving places and creating more sustainable, equitable, and vibrant communities.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in History, Architectural History, Historic Preservation, or a related field.
  • Strong research and analytical skills, including experience using online and archival repositories.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Adobe applications.
  • Knowledge of architectural styles and historic resource evaluation methods.
  • Ability to travel throughout California to conduct field surveys and research.
  • Valid driver's license.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree in Public History, History, Architectural History, Historic Preservation, or a related field.
  • Two (3) or more years of experience working as an Architectural Historian.
  • Familiarity with completing California Department of Parks and Recreation 523 forms.
  • Experience in local government preservation planning.
  • Meets the Secretary of the Interior's Professional Qualifications Standards in Architectural History (36 CFR Part 61).
  • Demonstrated ability to author CEQA/NEPA environmental document sections for cultural resources.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead architectural field surveys and technical report projects.
  • Demonstrated experience and competence with crafting and fulfilling cultural resources mitigation measures.
  • Demonstrated ability to prepare project proposals with detailed scope task breakdowns, schedules and budgets.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct field surveys and photography of historic-era resources.
  • Perform online and archival research related to historic properties and cultural resources.
  • Prepare architectural descriptions and historic context statements.
  • Conduct evaluations for the National Register of Historic Places, California Register of Historical Resources, and local historic registers.
  • Assist with preparation of technical reports and environmental documents in support of CEQA and NEPA compliance.
  • Complete California Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) 523 forms.
  • Support preservation planning and cultural resource projects across California.
  • Participate in occasional travel for fieldwork and research activities.
  • Perform additional project-related tasks as assigned.
