About The Position

The Architectural Designer is responsible for converting ideas and conceptual sketches into accurate design deliverables for projects pre and post timber sale. The Designer is responsible for developing detailed 3D models with an integrated timber-framed structure that follows post-and-beam, mortise and tenon, or simple joinery standards. As well as prepare architectural documents for functional, residential, and commercial projects. The Designer communicates first-hand with external stakeholders and participates in customer-facing meetings, presents progress in real-time, and prepares material lists for estimation. In this position, you will collaborate with different departments, including Sales, Digital Fabrication, Project Management, Engineering, Estimation, Procurement, and Production.

Requirements

  • A passion for design, engineering, fabrication, and construction.
  • Minimum of 2- year drafting experience and degree (preferred, not required).
  • Background in Architecture, Engineering, Construction, or similar/related Technical Programs.
  • Ability to read and prepare Construction Documents.
  • Knowledge of construction and drafting standards.
  • Strong 3D modelling skills.
  • Experience with: Revit, and AutoCAD, Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook).
  • A reliable team player who follows regular business hours, organizes and prioritizes their work, collaborates well, and closes their tasks on schedule.
  • Excellent analytical, time-management, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills. Communicates clearly through drawings, RFI's, and formal emails and informal group chats.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office 365 products such as Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of: Dynamo, Rhino, Grasshopper, Cadwork , Navisworks, Miro, Salesforce, BlueBeam , Cambium, Hsbcad , Lumion, D5, Photoshop, Python, C#, etc.
  • Experience with Heavy Timber and wood-based building systems.

Responsibilities

  • Completing expectations and delivering on the timeline for the determined scope of work.
  • Develop building code-compliant layouts and solutions that adhere to DCCR, HOA, and/or other design constraints.
  • Research and identify potential hazards and basic engineering specifications.
  • Optimize timber layout and connections to facilitate on-site assembly sequences and minimize labor.
  • Propose a quality check with the digital fabrication team when defining and integrating the timber frame.
  • Develop custom parts drawings for wooden components and steel parts.
  • Provide material and color palette guide for outsourced rendering packages.
  • Build accurate and error-free fabrication models using CAD, BIM, and cadCAM software like AutoCAD, Revit, and Cadwork.
  • Ensure the accuracy of the material takeoffs extracted from Revit, Cadwork, AutoCAD, Sketchup, etc.
  • Provide detailed BOMs for the procurement of timber, glulam, lumber, steel plates, hardware, and supplementary information needed for accurate material ordering.
  • Attend customer meetings and support the Supervisor and Project Coordinator in the conversion of the timber sale.
  • Serve as a secondary point of contact for customers with an Architectural Design Service.
  • Provide feedback and contribute to the management of projects going through an architectural service.
  • Become familiar with and adapt scope and deliverables depending on the different customer-facing contracts for Timberlyne's Architectural Services.
  • Serve as a primary contributor during the transition of a project from the architectural stage to the digital fabrication stage.
  • Ensure that architectural and engineering specifications and geometric and/or material nuances present are communicated.
  • Act as a supportive point of contact for customers during the architectural design phase of the Digital-Fab Process.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders involved when outsourcing the architectural or structural scope of work and deliverables.
  • Identify oversights, and execute on a game plan, with set dates and expectations.
  • Responsible for architectural updates occurring post-sale. Including architectural design modifications and architectural deliverables.
  • Ensure structural modifications made by the Dig-Fab team are communicated to the Designer.
  • Overlay models and confirm if Architectural updates will be . If No , update model to reflect changes. Move forward. If Yes , review w/PM to determine if modifications affect customer expectations.
  • Update Arch Sheets to match Structural updates.
  • Review structural scope of work with the digital fab team to avoid setbacks downstream.
  • Release updated Arch. Sheets for permitting or completion.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with other teams and departments, including sales, estimation, procurement, digital fabrication, engineering, project management, product development, and other external stakeholders, to help expedite processes and increase overall efficiency.
  • Demonstrate enthusiasm and elevate the customer journey - ensuring the architectural design process for contracted projects meets customer expectations, engineering requirements, and the goals and expectations of Timberlyne.
  • Continuously expand knowledge related to heavy timber construction methods, and connection types, including post and beam, simple joinery, and traditional timber framing with mortise and tenon connections.
  • Follow standard operating procedures, work instructions, and necessary documentation to ensure quality standards are being accomplished as per the quality goals and objectives of Timberlyne.
  • Contribute towards a culture of open-mindedness and continuous improvement - a culture built around a "growth mindset" and constructive feedback.
  • Adhere to the policies and procedures of Timberlyne. This includes the Employee Handbook and/or other human resource policies.
  • Support the improvement of modelling and documenting standards by refining or creating project templates, revit families and workflows, and amplifying the cross-compatibility between Revit, Cadwork , AutoCAD, and other programs.
  • Collaborate with Product Development in the creation of new templates, graphic standards, families, workflows, etc.
  • Collaborate with Product Development in the development of new PreDesigns.
