About The Position

The State of Connecticut, Department of Administrative Services, Properties and Facilities Management Division is seeking an Architect for the Technical Services unit. This unit provides technical services in engineering, architectural, and code compliance to other units within the Division and other State agencies housed in State-owned buildings. The role involves working on over $1B in active design and construction projects, ensuring external consultant designs comply with high-performance building policies, quality standards, and professional care expectations. It is a full-time, 40-hour per week position, typically Monday-Friday, first shift, with a hybrid/telework option available. The location is 450 Columbus Blvd, Hartford, CT.

Requirements

  • Eight (8) years of experience as a project architect with full responsibility for the architectural design of major building projects.
  • Possess and retain appropriate current licenses, permits and/or certifications including a State of Connecticut Architect’s license.
  • Considerable knowledge of and ability to apply principles, practices, and methods of architecture, building design, and the design aspects of building modification and construction.
  • Considerable knowledge of building materials and equipment.
  • Considerable knowledge of building, fire safety and other applicable codes.
  • Interpersonal skills.
  • Oral and written communication skills.
  • Considerable ability to conduct compliance reviews of construction specifications and drawings.
  • Ability to utilize computer software.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with renovation projects and interior space planning costing less than $1,000,000.
  • Experience with AutoCAD.
  • Experience with design and plan review reporting for projects costing greater than one million dollars.
  • Experience estimating project costs and developing project schedules.
  • Experience utilizing the Connecticut Building Code.
  • Experience with the State of Connecticut DAS bidding and procurement procedures for public works projects and consulting services.

Responsibilities

  • Provide State agency space planning support, review, and evaluation of Agency “Request for Space” submittals.
  • Assist in maintaining various excel databases and reports.
  • Prepare and review computer aided design documents.
  • Provide technical and design assistance for state building projects and interior renovation projects.
  • Participate with various state agencies in state building planning procedures.
  • Provide project management for facility capital improvement projects.
  • Utilize the state procurement and bidding process.
  • Assist in the development of the annual DAS Infrastructure Improvement Plan.
  • Evaluate minor capital improvement projects for state facilities.
  • Perform the programmatic and administrative requirements for state facility projects from planning through completion.
  • Create cost estimates for projects including developing project schedules.
  • Perform specialized duties in development of project design and preparation of plans and specifications for state buildings and institutions.
  • Coordinate architectural and engineering functions of projects.
  • Develop plans and specifications for projects.
  • Prepare and coordinate preliminary surveys and planning requirements.
  • Assist in preparation of standard specifications for guidance of subordinates and outside architects.
  • Review plans and specifications prepared by subordinates and/or outside architects for conformance with specifications.
  • Analyze design problems and recommend solutions.
  • Perform site inspections to confirm compliance with specifications.
  • Assist in developing capital improvement programs and continued maintenance plans.
  • Negotiate fees and prepare contracts for consulting architects and engineers.
  • Participate in meetings with consultants, agencies and project staff to establish and maintain work schedules and resolve questions.
  • Prepare reports and respond to inquiries as necessary.
  • Perform related duties as required.
