About The Position

The Architect supports the MBTA’s Office of Stations, Facilities, and Structures in the renewal, repair, and modernization of existing facilities across the transit system. This position assists the Engineering and Support Team in evaluating building conditions, developing design solutions, and preparing construction documents for maintenance shops, stations, administrative buildings, and support structures. The role involves field investigations, drafting, coordination with multidisciplinary teams, and ensuring that all work aligns with MBTA design standards, code compliance, operational needs, and long-term asset management goals.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Architecture from an accredited program.
  • Three (3) years of professional architectural experience, with emphasis on existing building assessment, renovation, and systems upgrades in operational or public facilities.
  • Working knowledge of building systems (architectural, structural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing) and their coordination in repair, retrofit, and renewal projects.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, Revit, and Bluebeam for developing as-built documentation, design revisions, and construction drawing sets; familiarity with BIM 360 or GIS preferred.
  • Experience conducting site assessments and field measurements, evaluating facility conditions, and preparing detailed technical reports and design documentation.
  • Knowledge of Massachusetts State Building Code, ADA/MAAB accessibility standards, NFPA, and state energy codes as they apply to rehabilitation and maintenance projects.
  • Ability to coordinate with multidisciplinary teams, including engineering, maintenance, and operations personnel—to ensure project designs are constructible, maintainable, and minimally disruptive to service.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills, including the ability to assist with project scoping, cost estimating, and construction administration support.
  • Familiarity with sustainability and resilience practices, particularly those aligned with MBTA asset management and facility modernization initiatives.
  • Ability to work safely in active transit environments, such as maintenance shops, stations, and support facilities, while adhering to MBTA and state safety protocols.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license without infractions in accordance with MBTA policy.

Nice To Haves

  • Professional experience with public agencies or transit authorities, especially in facilities renewal or maintenance divisions.
  • Experience with capital project delivery processes, including design review, procurement, and construction documentation.
  • LEED accreditation or demonstrated experience incorporating sustainable and energy-efficient design strategies.
  • Experience with building envelope evaluation, code compliance reviews, and accessibility upgrades.
  • Familiarity with transit facilities, infrastructure types, and maintenance workflows.
  • Strong proficiency in 3D visualization tools (SketchUp, Enscape, Lumion, or similar) to support design presentations and stakeholder communication.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the survey and documentation of existing facilities, including field measurements, condition assessments, and photographic records.
  • Prepare and update as-built and record drawings for facilities undergoing renovation, repair, or system replacement.
  • Develop schematic design concepts, design development drawings, and construction documents under the direction of senior architects and engineers.
  • Coordinate architectural layouts with mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and structural disciplines to ensure design compatibility and constructability.
  • Support the preparation of technical specifications, scope-of-work narratives, and cost estimates for facility renewal projects.
  • Participate in site inspections, field verifications, and punch-list activities during project implementation.
  • Assist in the review of shop drawings, submittals, and contractor RFIs to confirm compliance with design intent and MBTA standards.
  • Collaborate with engineering and maintenance teams to develop design solutions that minimize service interruptions and support ongoing operations.
  • Contribute to capital renewal planning efforts by updating facility condition data and identifying potential future project needs.
  • Prepare presentation materials, renderings, and visualizations to communicate design intent to stakeholders and project managers.
  • Maintain accurate digital and physical project files, ensuring compliance with MBTA documentation and record-keeping requirements.
  • Participate in code review and compliance verification, including building, accessibility, fire, and energy codes applicable to rehabilitation work.
  • Support the development of construction phasing plans to coordinate work within active operational environments.
  • Assist in evaluating materials and finishes for durability, maintainability, and alignment with MBTA facility standards.
  • Conduct periodic field reviews of in-progress construction to document progress and identify potential conflicts.
  • Collaborate with the Asset Management and Facilities Maintenance teams to align project deliverables with long-term maintenance and asset management goals.
  • Prepare internal reports, meeting minutes, and coordination documents summarizing design progress and technical discussions.
  • Participate in consultant coordination meetings and review design submissions from external architects and engineers for compliance with MBTA requirements.
