About The Position

Environmental Science Associates (ESA) is seeking On-Call Archaeological Field Technicians in the Southern California area. This role involves working on active construction sites, completing DPR forms, and possessing knowledge of regional archaeological materials. The position requires a minimum of one year of field experience or relevant academic field experience in Southern California. Candidates should be willing to travel for various on-site field work and live within a commutable distance to Southern California ESA office locations. The role requires an effective team member experienced in archaeological and/or paleontological monitoring, surveys, and documentation in accordance with local, state, and federal guidelines. A Bachelor's degree or higher in archaeology/anthropology/paleontology or a related field is required, along with demonstrated ability to use app-based software for field recordation and mapping. Candidates must be comfortable working outdoors in various weather conditions, traversing uneven terrain, and potentially lifting up to 50 pounds. Some night and/or weekend work may be required. A valid driver's license and experience driving 4-wheel-drive vehicles off-road are necessary.

Requirements

  • Minimum of one year of field experience or relative academic field experience in Southern California
  • Familiarity with working on active construction sites
  • Familiarity with completing DPR forms
  • Knowledgeable of archaeological materials common to the region
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in archaeology/anthropology/paleontology or related field
  • Demonstrated ability to use app-based software for field recordation and mapping
  • Open to travel as needed for projects and site visits
  • Ability to walk long distances carrying a backpack
  • Able to lift at least 50 pounds
  • Confident working outside, in remote and rural settings, as well as in urban environments
  • Ability to work in all types of weather, traversing uneven ground and sometimes steep terrain in forested environments, fields, arid lands, along stream banks, and in coastal/intertidal areas
  • Ability to work some nights and/or weekends
  • Possess a valid driver’s license
  • Experience driving 4 wheel-drive vehicles off-road
  • Familiarity working on construction sites
  • Familiarity coordinating with construction personnel
  • Familiarity interacting with Native American monitors

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in archaeological and/or paleontological monitoring
  • Experience in surveys and documentation of archaeological, and/or paleontological resources in accordance with applicable local, state, and federal guidelines and requirements

Responsibilities

  • Monitor construction activities and identify archaeological and/or paleontological resources
  • Effectively communicate with construction crews and project personnel
  • Write and maintain written daily survey, monitoring, recordation, and cataloging logs, including utilizing electronic data collection tools and GIS mapping applications
  • Other Ad-hoc tasks as needed
  • Participate in compliance monitoring and reporting activities for on-going construction projects
  • Work near heavy equipment
