About The Position

Join Stantec's Cultural Resources team as an Archaeological Field Lead based out of the Riverview, FL, Alpharetta, GA or Mobile, AL offices to play an integral role in leading archaeological surveys, testing, data recovery, and monitoring. This is a full-time, temporary, project-based position that requires extensive travel, including deployments of up to three months at a time. While the role is initially tied to project needs, there is potential for conversion to a regular full-time position upon successful project completion and business needs. The position will primarily consist of fieldwork but may include exposure to a wider range of other duties including laboratory research and analysis.

Requirements

  • Ability to complete physically demanding tasks in remote areas and/or humid continental climate, including walking, hiking, carrying loads up to 50 pounds, and digging
  • Frequent out-of-town travel, potentially for extended periods of time, up to 90%
  • Qualified applicants should exhibit strong technical skills, good communication skills, and feel comfortable making decisions in the field
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and be able to operate motorized vehicles
  • May require post-employment drug testing based on client needs
  • B.A./B.S. in anthropology/archaeology or related field
  • Successful completion of an archaeology field school
  • At least 3 years of experience conducting archaeological survey and excavation
  • At least 1 year of supervisory field experience.
  • Knowledge of Phase I, II, and III archaeological excavations/assessments required
  • Knowledge of prehistoric and historic material culture

Responsibilities

  • Perform archaeological fieldwork tasks including shovel test survey and excavation
  • Oversee and lead an archaeological crew during archaeological surveys
  • Utilize a variety of field methodologies, including archaeological survey, testing, excavation, surface collection, and monitoring
  • Leads the collection, recording, and interpretation of archaeological data in the field and analysis activities.
  • Record and evaluate soils using color (Munsell), texture, and inclusions
  • Orienteering using a compass, USGS topographic maps, plan maps, GPS units, iPads, and aerial photography
  • Assist with setting up a site grid, datum, and excavations units
  • Mapping site plans and individual shovel tests, units, and features in plan and profile
  • Identify historic and prehistoric artifacts following standard collection procedures.
  • Identify cultural features
  • Clean and prepare site surfaces for mapping and photography
  • Assist with laboratory analysis and reporting, as needed
  • May need to coordinate property entry with right of way agents
