About The Position

SWCA Environmental Consultants is seeking an Archaeological/Cultural Resources Crew Lead for their New Mexico/Four Corners business. This role primarily involves independently supervising and leading archaeological survey crews in the field, with a smaller portion of time dedicated to office support tasks. The Crew Lead will serve as a crew chief on state and federal lands and may assist with preparing site forms and technical reports. This is an hourly, regular, non-exempt position with benefits, requiring at least 40 hours per week. Applicants should be able to travel to Albuquerque or the Four Corners region for mobilization, as all work will be in New Mexico. Projects often include overtime hours or prevailing wage rates, and frequently require travel and overnight stays, with related costs and per diem covered.

Requirements

  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Anthropology, Archaeology or a closely related field.
  • A minimum of one year of field supervisory experience with a wide range of field methodologies, including archaeological survey, testing, excavation, and monitoring.
  • Experience in New Mexico.
  • Accredited field school experience.
  • Current listing, or ability to be listed, on federal and state cultural resource permits in New Mexico.
  • Current valid driver’s license and the ability to safely operate a 4wd vehicle on rugged, backcountry roads.
  • Ability to travel to a location, walk and conduct fieldwork for long hours, sometimes in inclement weather, rugged terrain, and often at high altitudes, and the ability to carry equipment and supplies weighing up to 40 pounds.

Nice To Haves

  • Up to two years of field supervisory experience.
  • Knowledge of ArcGIS software programs.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise and lead a small crew while conducting archaeological field work such archaeological monitoring, survey, testing, and data recovery.
  • Independently assign and direct the activities of others on behalf of SWCA, often in remote areas without immediate guidance from senior managers, to ensure quality and on-time delivery.
  • Ensure that employees understand their responsibilities and delegated tasks and being held accountable if crew members under your supervision are not performing their activities correctly, productively, and safely.
  • Serve as a conduit of communication between employees and senior managers, including communicating issues to relevant senior managers.
  • Receive and resolve complaints from employees in the field.
  • Monitor team productivity and offering timely performance guidance, including determining when corrective action is needed and delivering appropriate feedback.
  • Communicate with Field Directors, Project Managers, and GIS staff through regular, scheduled field status reports.
  • Extremely organized and meticulous with ensuring survey, documentation, and paperwork are complete.
  • Excellent leadership and supervision abilities, including problem-solving, constructive conflict resolution, and decision making.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and technical writing.
  • Participate in technical research and writing and perform data QA/QC for reporting efforts.
  • Assist with mapping responsibilities in the field, including collection of GPS data using handheld units.
  • Adhere to the safety program and look out for the safety of others, promptly communicating and mitigating safety hazards.
