About The Position

Protecting and maintaining the magnificent canopy of Edmonton's river valley, extensive urban parks, and boulevards is a core mission of the City. With over 400,000 city-owned open space and boulevard trees requiring tree maintenance, it is important that the Tree Care Team has a strong team of Arborists to ensure the health and vitality of the Urban Forest. As an Arborist II, you are at the heart of our urban forest's vitality, managing diverse tree care and maintenance assignments. You will spend much of your day responding to tree care requests, inspecting sites, and prioritizing work to ensure the safety of our residents. Working closely with a Crew Leader, you will help coordinate daily assignments and ensure our teams have the right equipment and safety measures in place. You will also provide valuable support through administrative tasks and training initiatives for new and returning staff members. Your role is critical in maintaining accurate data and high-quality service standards across the city. Ultimately, your work helps preserve the urban canopy and enhances the quality of life in our community.

Requirements

  • Grade 12 required
  • A minimum of 4 years as an Arborist in the field performing operational tree care tasks
  • Valid Alberta Class 3 driver's licence (or provincial equivalent) with Air Brakes. Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's D permit is required
  • Fit for a respirator and compliance with the City of Edmonton's Code of Practice for Respiratory Protective Equipment
  • Compliance with safety standards for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including steel-toe boots
  • Possession of current Standard First Aid, CPR-C and AED certifications

Nice To Haves

  • Certificates or Diplomas in Arboriculture would be considered an asset
  • GIS tree inventory software or the Davey Tree Keeper system
  • ISA Certified Tree Climber
  • Chainsaw Training and Competency

Responsibilities

  • Respond to and inspect requests for tree care that come through various service channels
  • Evaluate and prioritize tree care needs based on urgency and the health of the urban forest
  • Update records and inform interested and/or affected parties of prioritization decisions
  • Perform Tree Risk Assessments for live tree removals to ensure public safety
  • Coordinate safety measures and logistics for crews, including wildlife sweeps and utility clearances
  • Assist in assigning daily work using specialized inventory systems and ensure data accuracy
  • Provide support during storm responses and assist with team logistics and coordination
  • Help deliver orientation, safety talks, and training to support the growth of your teammates
  • Review and recommend improvements for safety procedures and operational standards
