About The Position

The Edith J. Carrier Arboretum at James Madison University is seeking applications from JMU students for the position of Arboretum Landscape & Horticulture Student Aide. These positions will be under the supervision of the Arboretum Landscape Supervisor for up to 15 hours per week, between 7 am and 3 pm, Monday through Friday. This role is designed as a work-based learning experience.

Requirements

Must be a JMU student.
Must be degree-seeking and enrolled at least half-time (6 credits for undergraduate, 5 for graduate).
Must be able to complete work hours between 7 am and 3 pm, Monday through Friday.
Must be able to navigate uneven terrain.
Must be physically active for work shifts.
Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
Must be at least 19 years old.
Must have held a driver's license for at least 2 years.
Must be able to learn to drive an ATV with a water tank trailer attached.
Possess basic computer skills including knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.
Must be willing and able to manage and keep a timely and consistent work week schedule.
Must complete an I-9 form and present documentation of identity and eligibility to work in the U.S. (E-Verify system used).

Nice To Haves

A basic working knowledge of landscape practices and VA flora is preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

General grounds maintenance including mowing, weed eating, blowing, and weeding.
Seasonal maintenance such as fall garden bed clean-up, mulching, and trail chipping.
Learning to identify weeds and invasives from planted material to maintain landscape beds.
Assisting with potting plants for plant sales and from propagation/air pruning tables.
Assisting with creating tags and plant sale signs for semi-annual plant sales.
Executing plant sale set up and assisting with plant sale order pulls.
Collaborating with office staff to assist with event set ups.
Other related duties as assigned.
