About The Position

The Part-Time Aquatic Support position is an integral part of the JCC Aquatics Department and is comprised of three primary responsibilities. During scheduled hours this team member may support the Aquatics Department as a Lifeguard, Swim Instructor, or Aquatics Supervisor. PT Aquatics Support-Lifeguard The safety and well-being of all persons using the pool is the primary concern and responsibility of the lifeguard position. This is accomplished through the proper enforcement of all the Jewish Community Center policies, procedures, and rules regarding pool use. Optimally, by doing this, being alert, and being prepared to act in an emergency at all times, accidents will be prevented. PT Aquatics Support-Swim Lesson Instructor Instruct students on proper water safety while adhering to all policies and procedures set forth by the Aquatics Manual. Plan and ensure students’ progression in learning water safety skills. Professionally communicate progress to participants, and parents. Timely communicate any safety concerns with all appropriate parties, including supervisors. PT Aquatics Support-Aquatics Supervisor Position Summary: In the absence of the Aquatics Leadership Team or during periods of high program volume, the Aquatics Supervisor will be tasked with monitoring, evaluating, and supervising the daily operations of the Aquatics Department. As acting shift supervisor, you may still be in the lifeguard rotation or teaching swim lessons. The Aquatics Supervisor will handle all questions or situations that arise and will reach out to the Aquatics Leadership Team, or Manager on Duty for assistance and support.

Requirements

  • Age Requirement:18 years and older
  • High School diploma
  • American Red Cross Lifeguard certification & American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor
  • Must be able to teach, communicate, and work with people of all ages.
  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs.

Nice To Haves

  • 1 year Aquatic experience with supervisory responsibilities
  • Certified Pool Operator (CPO)

Responsibilities

  • Enforce all rules of the Jewish Community Center.
  • Control crowds and maintain a safe swimming environment.
  • Inform your supervisor of potentially dangerous situations.
  • Be professional, alert, courteous, and tactful.
  • Be in a state of preparedness to act in any emergency situation.
  • Perform appropriate rescues when necessary and perform First Aid.
  • Report all injuries and rescues to the Aquatics Supervisor.
  • After any accident or incident occurs, immediately complete the appropriate documentation and form.
  • Scan entire area of responsibility every 20 seconds.
  • Know emergency procedures for both life-threatening and non-life-threatening situations.
  • Be the first to respond to any situation that requires First Aid or is a life-threatening or non-life-threatening emergency.
  • Always be on time for scheduled shifts and participate in all in-service programs.
  • During down time you are responsible for checking the bathrooms, trash, and deck for cleanliness.
  • All other duties as assigned.
  • Adhere to all policies and procedures as set forth in the Aquatics Manual.
  • Teach group or private lessons to people of all ages.
  • Provide safe instruction to the participants of the JCC swimming programs.
  • Utilize American Red Cross Learn to Swim program materials and resources.
  • Complete necessary planning and paperwork inherent to the position.
  • Attend all staff and evaluation meetings as scheduled.
  • Instructors will be expected to have tentative block plans for each class.
  • Always start and finish class on time.
  • Check off skills as the students accomplish them.
  • Open communication with parents about any lesson information, including participant progress, and class scheduling.
  • Maintain student progress reports and communicate students’ progress to parents.
  • Make use of teaching aids.
  • Instructors will always be in the water with the students.
  • Attendance must be taken each day for every class.
  • A professional attitude must be maintained at all times and all swim lessons should be fun, safe, and well-organized.
  • Report problems you are having immediately (with children, teachers, counselors, etc.)
  • Adhere to all policies and procedures as set forth in the Aquatics Manual.
  • Routinely test and record water chemistry as required by the Health Department.
  • Identify, remedy, or section-off facility hazards or safety concerns.
  • Handle customer service and safety complaints with urgency and professionalism.
  • Supervise and direct Lifeguarding and Swim Instructor staff on duty.
  • Ensure Lifeguard rotations are on time, and swim lessons start & end on time.
  • Report any scheduling or safety concerns to the Aquatics Operations Coordinator or Aquatics Director.
  • During the summer season, help with the coordination and execution of JCamp swim lessons.
  • During the summer season, you may be assigned to assist with operations at the Hoover location.
  • At any given point during your scheduled hours, you may be required to switch roles (Lifeguard, Swim Instructor Aquatics Supervisor) to support the Aquatics Department operational needs.
