About The Position

The City of Modesto is seeking an enthusiastic Aquatics Program Leader to join their community programs team. This role involves delivering swim instruction, supporting daily pool operations, and leading various aquatics activities such as lessons, camps, fitness classes, and special events. The position is hourly, limited to approximately 29 hours per week up to 1,000 hours annually, or approximately 40 hours per week up to 6 months and no more than 1,000 hours annually. It is a non-benefited, non-classified, at-will position. The Aquatics Program Leader functions as a swim instructor and slide attendant, assisting with the delivery and operation of aquatics programs. This includes swim lessons, camps, fitness classes, special events, and party rentals, as well as assisting with setup, supervision, and daily operations in accordance with established policies and training. The role also involves instructing and monitoring aquatics activities.

Requirements

  • Ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance, including the ability to follow and to interpret written instructions and to perform basic arithmetic.

  • Ability to coordinate and schedule a variety of activities.

  • Minimum of 6 months of experience teaching swim lessons, working with children, working with recreational programs or event planning.
  • Must be a minimum of 15 years of age at time of application.
  • Possession of First Aid Certificate, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certificate, and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) Certificate required within 30 days of appointment and must be maintained for continued employment.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver top-notch swim instruction.

  • Serve as a swim instructor and slide attendant.
  • Assist with the delivery and operation of aquatics programs including swim lessons, camps, fitness classes, special events, and party rentals.
  • Assist with set up, supervision, and daily operations in accordance with established policies and training.
  • Instruct and monitor activities for aquatics.
  • Maintain and submit detailed reports and records, as required.
  • Attend meetings and training sessions, as required.
  • Attend trainings and fulfill duties and responsibilities for cash handling, if requested.
  • Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other City employees, and the public using principles of good customer service.
  • Observe and maintain a safe working environment in compliance with established safety programs and procedures.
  • Teach or assist with swim lessons following the approved curriculum.
  • Maintain class rosters and communicate progress to parents.
  • Set up and maintain safe teaching areas.
  • Monitor ride entry and exit points for safety compliance as a Slide Attendant.
  • Enforce rules related to ride safety, height and rider spacing as a Slide Attendant.
  • Coordinate with lifeguards to maintain consistent flow and safety as a Slide Attendant.
  • Perform related duties as assigned (Marginal Functions).
