About The Position

Associated Students, Inc. (ASI) is a non-profit corporation guided by a student board and managed by full-time professional staff. ASI serves the campus population by providing opportunities for student engagement, employment, and programs and services such as recreation and wellness, student union and activities, student government, and childcare. The Bronco Recreation and Intramural Complex (BRIC) Aquatics team is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the BRIC Pool and lounge area, ensuring aquatic safety, offering instructional programs and certification courses, and creating engaging programs and special events for the campus community. This role offers opportunities to develop leadership skills, professional development, and teamwork.

Requirements

  • Current American Red Cross Lifeguard Training, CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, Emergency Oxygen, and First Aid for Lifeguards.
  • Must be able to swim 300 yards continuously using both front crawl and breaststroke.
  • Must be able to swim 20 yards, retrieve a 10-pound object, and remove it from the pool within 1 minute, 40 seconds.
  • Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
  • Ability to follow routine verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to effectively communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to maintain professional work conduct.
  • Ability to make independent decisions and make recommendations.
  • Ability to adhere to work rules, follow directions, use time effectively, and work productively without close supervision.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with a diverse student population and campus community.
  • Ability to operate a computer workstation using word processing, spreadsheet, and other computer applications.
  • Ability to successfully pass a background screening.
  • Must be a Cal Poly Pomona student eligible to work in the United States.
  • Must be currently enrolled in a minimum of 6.0 units (undergraduate) or 4.0 units (graduate).
  • Must have a minimum overall and Cal Poly Pomona GPA of 2.0 and be in good academic standing.
  • Individuals enrolled only in Extended University are not eligible for hire.

Nice To Haves

  • American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor certification or Water Safety Instructor certification.
  • Good health and physical/mental ability to perform the job requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure the surveillance and safety of participants in the aquatics facilities.
  • Assist with the overall management of Aquatic Staff, pool operations, and programs, including day-to-day operations.
  • Assist with the recruitment, selection, training, scheduling, and supervision of Aquatic Staff.
  • Serve as shift lead for daily operations and programs.
  • Assist with the development and implementation of orientations and trainings for aquatics staff.
  • Enforce aquatic facility policies, rules, and regulations regarding pool and poolside lounge area use.
  • Maintain a professional appearance and attitude, upholding a high standard of customer service.
  • Perform basic facility maintenance and secondary duties.
  • Utilize appropriate department software and tools to complete work assignments and projects.
  • Prepare and maintain appropriate activity reports for aquatics.
  • When serving as an on-duty lifeguard, maintain constant surveillance of participants, and act immediately and appropriately to ensure safety in emergencies.
  • Recognize and respond quickly and effectively in emergencies, providing emergency care and treatment until the arrival of emergency medical services.
  • Attend all mandatory trainings, meetings, and workshops.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
