About The Position

As an integral part of the UAMS Surgical Intensive Care (SICU) Team, the APRN/PA works collaboratively with the attending physicians and surgical residents to ensure continuity of care in the Surgical ICU. SICU APRNs/PAs help plan, implement, and evaluate health care treatments. Daily rounds, a variety of procedures, monitoring patient progress, and providing patient and family education are part of the wide scope of practice. SICU APRNs/PAs work closely with case managers and social workers to coordinate patient care. In addition, SICU APRN/PAs function as a liaison to bedside nurses and ancillary staff.

Requirements

  • APRN: Master's degree in nursing
  • Three (3) years of nursing experience
  • Acute Care Certifications
  • Licensed Registered Nurse in Arkansas
  • APRN Licensure
  • PA: Master's Education
  • PA Licensure
  • Must be able to operate all standard nursing equipment essential to performing the job (i.e., scales, procedure equipment, needles, blood pressure equipment, and EKG machines).
  • Must have normal communication and sensory requirements
  • Ability to comply with CDC Universal Precautions when indicated.

Responsibilities

  • Utilizes critical thinking and the nursing process to assess and identify patient/family short- and long-term physical, psychosocial, educational, and cultural needs for assigned patient populations.
  • Provides ongoing and follow-up care and patient/family education.
  • Accurately interprets health assessment data and applies findings in directing patient care.
  • Utilizes knowledge and expertise when planning long and short-term care, including appropriate pharmacologic and diagnostic treatments as needed.
  • Prioritizes patient/family needs to optimize the health outcome in a cost-efficient manner.
  • Documents all health data, the plan of care, and care according to policy.
  • Evaluates patient/family response to the plan of care through systematic follow-up.
  • Documentation of the patient/family outcomes, reassessing, and modifying the plan as needed to achieve health goals.
  • Accurately completes all billing forms, including diagnostic (ICD-10) and treatment (CPT) codes, based on federal and state laws and UAMS policy.
  • Communicates with referring physicians, allied health providers, and hospital staff as appropriate.
  • Assures universal screenings for alcohol use on all patients and provides interventions for those patients screening positive
  • Actively participates in quality improvement activities (i.e., collecting data, suggesting and implementing approved changes, and measuring outcomes) and the development of strategies to improve patient care delivery and cost effectiveness.
  • Critically evaluates existing practice in light of current research findings.
  • Disseminates relevant research findings through practice, publication, education, and/or consultation.
  • Other duties may be assigned to this position.
