About The Position

Nebraska Public Power District has an opening for an Apprentice Substation Technician Intern at its York Operations Center in York, Nebraska. The internship runs from mid-May to mid-August 2027 and provides the opportunity to learn and receive mentorship from experienced substation technicians in the field. The intern will support substation maintenance, testing, and operations to help safely maintain electrical service in the assigned area. Work includes installation, checkout, calibration, maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, and operation of electrical equipment. Frequent travel, occasional overnight stays, and emergency response are part of the position. The intern reports to the Substation Supervisor. Before starting, the incumbent must complete a background check, physical, and drug screen, and must report wearing safety shoes meeting ASTM F2413-05 specifications. The position closes October 30, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. Central Time.

Requirements

Successfully completed the first year (first two semesters) of college in the Electrical or Electro-Mechanical program at Southeast Community College-Milford.
Complete a background check, physical, and drug screen before starting.
Wear safety shoes meeting ASTM F2413-05 specifications.
Respond to emergencies and be available for frequent travel and occasional overnight stays.

Responsibilities

Complete new installations, modifications, troubleshooting, preventive and predictive maintenance, and repair of electrical and mechanical equipment up to 345 kV.
Follow all policies and procedures to ensure work is completed correctly and safely.
Safely plan, organize, and perform emergent and scheduled work.
Utilize work management processes.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Support substation maintenance, testing, and operations, including installation, checkout, calibration, maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, and operation of electrical equipment.
