About The Position

This position performs responsible skilled and technical work assisting in the inspection, repair, and maintenance of electrical substation equipment; does related work as required. Work is performed under the immediate supervision of a Relay Technician.

Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent.
Must obtain CPR certification and a CDL driver's license valid in the State of Florida within six months of employment.
Skill in the use of equipment and tools.
Ability and willingness to learn to operate technical equipment and practices necessary for substation maintenance and operation.
Ability to keep written records.
Ability to follow oral and written instructions including sketches and diagrams.
Ability to recognize malfunctions in equipment.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.

Responsibilities

Assists with the inspection, maintenance, and repair of substation and related equipment. This includes circuit breakers, transformers, circuit switchers, switchgear, disconnect switches, lightning arrestors, hook switches, ground connections, on-load tap changers, battery banks, capacitor banks, and relay devices.
Records meter readings at individual substations on an established schedule. These readings include voltage, current, circuit breaker operations and condition, transformer status (oil levels, temperature and overall condition), battery bank condition and status, and safety equipment inspection.
Inspects components related to distribution substations such as battery recharging equipment, voltage regulators, over current relays, reclosing relays, switchgear, re-closers, and circuit breakers.
Operates aerial devices, digger derrick, cable tension equipment, trencher, and related equipment.
Climbs utility poles.
Maintains substation grounds, fences, and buildings.
Performs electrical troubleshooting on various substation equipment issues as required.
Performs general substation maintenance such as weed abatement and cleaning of facilities.
Tests transformers for PCB contamination.
Runs conduit, pulls wire, and performs basic electrical work.
Serves on stand-by and works trouble calls as assigned.
Maintains, cleans, and repairs tools and cleans job sites after job completion.
Follows safety rules and regulations and uses safe work practices.
Performs related tasks as required.
