About The Position

This role involves installing new piping and repairing, renewing, or relocating existing piping. The apprentice will also perform acetylene and electric welding work. The position requires the ability to work with various types of materials and tools, understand blueprints, and ensure safety precautions are followed. The apprentice will maintain plumbing systems, control systems, and insulate work as needed.

Requirements

  • Ability to install new piping and repair, renew, or relocate existing piping.
  • Ability to perform acetylene and electric welding work.
  • Ability to procure, cut, rig, align, and install pipe, fittings, valves, gaskets, and hangers.
  • Ability to use blueprints or drawings on installation or repair work.
  • Ability to select appropriate materials (brass, copper, lead, iron, stainless steel, plastic, spiral riveted or galvanized pipe, bolts, gaskets, and valves).
  • Ability to apply proper oil and cutting compounds when using threading and cutting machines and hand tools.
  • Ability to use caution to avoid accidents by checking for gases or other injurious substances.
  • Ability to make patterns for devising odd-size fittings.
  • Ability to check/replace steam traps, fire systems, valves, and sprinklers.
  • Ability to clean pipelines and heaters.
  • Ability to use a level, tape measure, and other calibrated equipment.
  • Ability to install/maintain steam traps.
  • Ability to maintain control systems.
  • Ability to insulate and cover work as needed.
  • Ability to maintain plumbing throughout the mill and company-owned property.
  • Ability to regulate and operate electric arc welding machine.
  • Ability to use gauges for proper setting of oxygen and acetylene valves.
  • Ability to prepare surfaces for welding using wire brush, chipping hammer, and grinder.
  • Ability to perform welding on copper, iron, aluminum, brass, and alloy metals.
  • Ability to operate acetylene burning machine when fabricating materials.
  • Simple math skills such as understanding fractions and division.
