About The Position

The Apprentice Meter Tech program at Georgia Power is designed to provide comprehensive, high-quality training over two years, preparing individuals for Meter Tech A positions. The program consists of four modules, each combining classroom and on-the-job training. Apprentices are expected to perform productive work for which they are trained and qualified. Successful completion of module evaluations is required for progression. Upon program completion, employees are promoted to Meter Tech A classification when a vacancy becomes available, and they must be willing to relocate to that assigned location anywhere in the state of Georgia.

Requirements

  • Must pass the Construction and Skilled Trades test (CAST).
  • Must pass the Apprentice Meter Tech Skills and Knowledge Test (AM SKAT).
  • Must pass a Post Offer Employment Test (POET).
  • Must currently not exceed (and maintain) a personal body weight (fully dressed and including work boots) of 270 pounds.
  • Must provide proper safety toe shoes or boots.
  • Must meet the physical requirements of the position, including bending, kneeling, crawling, walking, overhead reaching, stooping, and standing for long periods of time, working outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Must be able to lift and drag equipment weighing 60 lbs. or more in a safe manner.
  • Must successfully complete a thorough background verification and drug screening.
  • Must have at least one year of verifiable driving experience.
  • Must hold a valid driver’s license for the class vehicle to be operated.
  • Must have no revocation of driving privileges within the 36 months prior to application.
  • Must have no convictions of major traffic violations (DUI, hit and run, reckless driving, etc.) within the 12 months prior to application, or any pending charges for a major traffic violation at the time of application.
  • Must consent to a continuous monitoring of your Motor Vehicle Record.
  • Intermediate Computer Skills (file management, Windows, and Microsoft Office Applications) required.

Nice To Haves

  • Documented minimum of 2-year vocational/technical school degree / Associate in Electronics/Electrical/Telecommunications study, military training OR At least 4 years' work experience with installation, maintenance, and testing of commercial and industrial meter systems and current meter technologies OR A combination of related work experience/military training and credits towards a 2-year degree/certification in Electronics/Electrical/Telecommunications - TOTALING 4 or more years.
  • Detailed knowledge of electrical theory and mechanical principles.
  • Basic understanding of Electrical Distribution Systems.
  • Knowledge/training and/or work experience of vectors, trigonometry, AC/DC circuits, transformers, single/three phase metering systems, meter sockets, installations of meters (connect/reconnect/disconnect) and/or meter testing.
  • Prior experience with AMI Smart Meters and/or Smart Meter Network.
  • Demonstrated effective communication skills.
  • Proven excellent customer service skills.
  • Demonstrated good organizational skills.
  • Proven problem solver.
  • Knowledge of hand tools.

Responsibilities

  • Interface with other departments (Marketing, Customer Services, Engineering, and Line), Customers, Electrical Contractors, and Electrical Inspectors to ensure safe and compliant metering installations.
  • Install and maintain single-phase and three-phase mechanical and electronic self-contained metering installations.
  • Install transformer-rated metering systems, including sizing instrument transformers, determining multipliers, programming solid-state meters, and wiring/maintenance of all types of single and three-phase transformer-rated installations.
  • Perform field tests on all types of self-contained and transformer-rated mechanical and electronic meters.
  • Install, test, and maintain pulse metering systems, including relays, recorders, totalizers, telecommunication systems, downloading load profile data, and determining pulse values.
  • Install and program multifunction meters, including hands-on design, wiring, testing, and troubleshooting of multi-circuit, multi-function metering systems.
  • Work outside in inclement weather.
  • Be available for storm duty, which may include evenings, nights, weekends, and/or holidays.
  • Be available to work at other company locations when needed, including traveling out of town and overnight stays.

Benefits

  • The starting salary will be based upon the conditions of the Memorandum of Agreement Wage Schedule between Georgia Power and IBEW Local Union Number 84.
  • Current starting pay for ALL HIRES is $7120 per month which equates to approximately $41.07 per hour (regardless of prior experience/skills). This pay rate is non-negotiable.
