About The Position

This apprenticeship program at the Board of Water & Light (BWL) is designed for individuals to develop journey worker capabilities in repairing and maintaining equipment across all electric generating stations and associated equipment. Through independent study, vocational courses, and hands-on experience, apprentices will progress towards becoming skilled maintenance mechanics.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Qualified in Pre-Apprenticeship Pool: Math - Level 4, Reading - Level 5, Writing - Level 6.
  • Good BWL work record.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word and Office 365.
  • Must climb and work from ladders and scaffolding.
  • Must have good visual acuity for reading blueprints and operating rigging and lifting equipment.
  • Good hearing is necessary to localize sounds and hear conversations in noisy environments.
  • Must be able to work in confined spaces.
  • Must be respirator certified and fit tested.

Responsibilities

  • Repair and maintain various processes and equipment associated with all BWL facilities, including fuel system equipment, boiler systems, RO systems, condensate systems, wastewater treatment systems, cooling tower systems, hydro systems, and generating systems.
  • Lubricate and perform routine oil changes on equipment.
  • Use tools of the trade for millwright, machine repair, and tool and die duties.
  • Read and interpret blueprints.
  • Operate mobile equipment such as trucks, cranes, worker lifts, and scissor lifts.
  • Perform all tasks safely, prioritizing individual safety and the safety of others.
  • Climb and work from ladders and scaffolds.
  • Work in confined spaces.
  • Communicate effectively through speech and writing.
  • Follow BWL safety manual and wear required personal protective equipment.
  • Attend training for safety awareness or skills improvement as required.
  • Willingness to work any shift, weekends, and rotating weekly standby.
  • Perform other duties as necessitated by job responsibilities.
