About The Position

Performs miscellaneous unskilled and semi-skilled manual labor duties and operates non-complex equipment in maintenance and construction of electric distribution lines. This is the beginning entry point for the DOL Apprentice program. Employees who do not have a Class A CDL (Commercial) Texas driver's license must successfully obtain this license within 180 days of hire. The City of Brenham offers an in-house training program to obtain this license. For level EAL1, a valid Class A Texas commercial driver's license (CDL) is required.

Requirements

High school graduation or its equivalent; or any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Standard office practices and procedures.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and the general public
Communicate effectively
Operate equipment and tools used in maintaining and repairing electrical systems
Read and understand manuals, policies, and other documents.

Valid Class A Texas commercial driver's license (CDL) is required for level EAL1.

Nice To Haves

Completed the first 1,000 hours of DOL program and have a valid Class A CDL (for level EAL1)

Responsibilities

Performs work in a safe and efficient manner
Ensures safety of self, other crew members, and the public as part of planning and performing work
Participates in job site briefing for crew including discussion of job plan, personal protective equipment (PPE) and risk mitigation
Must be able to courteously communicate with customers, the public, and City staff
Cleans and stocks utility trucks with materials, poles, and transformers
Send materials up pole and pull up wire using hand line
Lifts heavy objects
Assists lineworkers as directed
Installs barricades and safety cones before job and removes after work is completed
Operates equipment such as truck, mower, and various hand and power tools such as chain saw, weed eater, brush axe, power saw and the like
Loads, unloads, assists in installation and removal of poles
Mows grass, chips limbs and performs other grounds maintenance
Temporarily assist in construction, maintenance repair and rehabilitation activities in other departments, including Streets, Water/Wastewater, Parks, Meter Reading, and Airport
Under direction from Superintendent, Assistant Superintendent, or Crew Leader may perform daily pre-checks of vehicles and equipment prior to leaving the yard and documents results and maintain vehicles and equipment in proper working condition, including; checking oil, water, fuel, tires, and hydraulic system, and making appropriate adjustments
Must be available to stand "On Call" during evenings, holidays, and weekends as part of rotational schedule with other lineworkers. Also, must be available to respond to overtime for emergencies.
Follows and works within the Department of Labor Apprenticeship Standards for the Apprentice I level.
Must be able to work outside in all types of weather conditions, including storms, to respond to emergencies and outages.
Performs other duties as assigned.
