About The Position

This position will be filled as an Apprentice Lineman. This position is responsible for performing overhead distribution construction work for grid investment and/or capital improvement projects. Some examples include reconductors, storm hardening, voltage conversions, adding/upgrading sectionalizing equipment. Other duties may include various system repairs and storm restoration. These projects will be in various locations across the MPC service territory and reporting to remote locations within 65 miles of the established headquarters, subject to applicable mileage reimbursement, may be required. Additionally, occasional overnight travel may be required.

Requirements

  • Must pass or have passed the Construction and Skills Trade Test (CAST) in order to be considered.
  • Must currently have or possess the ability to obtain a valid Mississippi Commercial Driver’s license within 6 months of employment.
  • Must maintain weight to comply with equipment manufacturer's restrictions.
  • Must be available for call out overtime work, scheduled overtime work, and overnight travel as needed.
  • Availability for timely response to call outs are required.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of customer relation skills.
  • Ability to think clearly and make logical decisions under pressure.
  • Working knowledge of electricity and the maintenance of electrical lines is necessary.
  • Ability to operate machinery and vehicles.
  • Ability to use basic hand tools.
  • Ability to work at heights.
  • Ability to climb tall structures.
  • Ability to read blueprints.
  • Ability to lift, carry, and pull heavy objects.
  • Ability to work in extreme weather conditions.
  • Ability to work in enclosed, dark areas.

Responsibilities

  • Safely perform any work normally or reasonably required in this classification.
  • Build, maintain, inspect, trouble-shoot, replace, and repair distribution power lines, poles, and related equipment according to Company specifications and manufacturer's recommendations.
  • Review work orders and determine material needed to complete jobs.
  • Safely load wire coils, poles, equipment, and materials onto trucks.
  • Use hand tools to assemble materials, connectors, brackets, and other equipment in preparation for installation on pole-lines or underground systems.
  • Frequently work aerially from a ladder, lift bucket, and pole-climbing tools to remove/replace/repair equipment.
  • Climb utility poles and other structures.
  • Clean and maintain tools/trucks.
  • Maintain regular attendance and comply with all safety procedures, practices, and requirements.
  • Effectively communicate in person, by radio, and by phone to various company personnel in the normal course of duties.
  • Complete a prescribed Journeyman Development Program.
