The Apprentice Lineman participates in a four-year apprenticeship to learn Journey Lineman skills to construct and maintain Keys Energy Services (KEYS) overhead transmission and distribution lines, poles, towers, fixtures, streetlights, and services, and remove and install transformers. Starting pay rate for this position, depending on experience: $34.44 to $38.58. Through shadowing of, and instruction by, Journey Lineman/Linewoman, the Apprentice learns skills that build upon each other through four distinct stages with required testing and passing to progress to the subsequent step. At a summary level, the stages include: Stage 1: Groundman work learning materials of the trade and required stocking of the vehicles. Stage 2: Learn how electricity works. Working with a Journey Lineman/Linewoman, begin servicing residential, low voltage lines. Stage 3: Learn transformer banks and begin servicing residential, low-voltage lines independently. Stage 4: Learn and implement practices of performing work on primary power lines. While advancing through the four stages, the Apprentice Lineman/Linewoman will progressively: Construct and maintain overhead and underground transmission and distribution lines, poles, towers, install banners, fixtures, service transformers, streetlights, and ball park lights, by using boats, barges, ladders, and vehicles, located on land and/or over water. Troubleshoot overhead/underground conductors, transformers, services, meter sockets, and service panels. Maintain, service, upgrade, and install substation equipment in an energized environment (120-volt to 138,000-volt). Follow guidelines and safety practices of KEYS and APPA/NEC/NESC for working on energized lines of up to 138 KV. Review switching procedures and identify any issues that need to be addressed prior to following the procedure in accordance with KEYS Switching Procedures.
