About The Position

The Apprentice (Journeyman Press) learns and performs printing-related tasks to support efficient press operations and achieve on-time production, product quality standards, low waste, and operational safety. Working as part of a press crew during an assigned shift, the apprentice helps coordinate press and plate operations. Duties may include newsprint reel setup and operation, newsprint staging, roll preparation, plate processing and placement, basic ink setting, equipment maintenance, and specified reporting. The role also involves tow-motor material handling and plate-room duties.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED equivalent.
• Ability to lift and carry up to 100 pounds and push or pull up to 2,000 pounds, such as rolls of paper.
• Ability to work night shifts, weekends, and holidays on a rotation schedule.
• Ability to adapt to change, prioritize work, handle multiple tasks, remain flexible, and interact with people patiently.
• Ability to stand for long periods, climb stairs on a six-level press structure, and, for maintenance and some cleaning tasks, stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl in tight areas.
• Color vision is required.
• Reliability and punctuality for scheduled shifts.

Nice To Haves

• Experience in web offset printing; production experience of any kind may be helpful.
• Mechanical ability and familiarity with computers.
• Previous machine operation or maintenance experience.

Responsibilities

• Make ready and print jobs, then set up for the next production run.
• Assist with press, plate, and reel-room operations as assigned.
• Perform newsprint reel setup and operation, newsprint staging, and roll preparation.
• Process and place printing plates and perform basic ink setting.
• Perform equipment maintenance and specified reporting.
• Work with the press crew to maintain on-time press performance and product quality standards and meet waste goals.
• Handle materials using a tow motor, including clamp or fork attachments.
• Report reliably for scheduled shifts on time and ready to begin work.
