About The Position

The City of Springfield is seeking applicants for an Apprentice Instrument Electrician position within the Office of Public Utilities, Division of Supv Maint (Instrument). This role is based at CWLP DALLMAN in Springfield, Illinois. The position involves assisting in the troubleshooting, maintenance, and repair of industrial control systems and instrumentation, including work with boiler processes, turbines, scrubber controls, CEM, and analytical instrumentation. The apprentice will support PLCs, DCS, and digital and analog control systems, assist with component-level repair of control boards, and support the maintenance of various drive systems. Responsibilities also include assisting with conduit installation, wiring, terminations, learning to interpret technical documentation, applying formulas for equipment calibration, and completing requisitions.

Requirements

• High school graduate or GED equivalent
• Unrestricted 20/20 eyesight (vision correctable to 20/20 accepted) with no color blindness
• Valid driver’s license at time of background check
• Demonstrate self-motivation to independently complete the apprenticeship program
• Successfully complete 8,000 hours of on-the-job training and a minimum of 576 hours of coursework
• Successfully complete all CWLP/IBEW JATC on-the-job training and coursework
• Provide a passing score of 6 or greater on the NJATC exam with application

Nice To Haves

• Applicants who can verify participation in and good standing, or completion of an accredited electrical apprenticeship recognized by the Electrical Training Alliance, whose program utilized the ETA aptitude test requiring a score of 6 or better to enter, may qualify for a direct interview as determined by the JATC if apprenticeship opportunities are available.
• Preference for employment given to full-time city residents.

Responsibilities

• Assist in troubleshooting, maintenance, and repair of industrial control systems and instrumentation
• Work with boiler processes, turbines, scrubber controls, CEM, and analytical instrumentation
• Support PLCs, DCS, and digital and analog control systems
• Assist with repair of control boards down to the component level
• Support maintenance of variable frequency drives (VFDs), SCR drives, and DC drives
• Assist with conduit installation, wiring, and terminations
• Learn to interpret schematics, technical manuals, and construction drawings
• Apply algebraic formulas for equipment calibration
• Complete material, service, and maintenance requisitions
