About The Position

The three-year Apprenticeship Program provides motivated employees with supervised on-the-job training in various areas including preventive maintenance, plumbing, electrical, HVAC/controls, and general maintenance. The program aims to prepare employees for leadership roles within schools. Apprentices will rotate through Preventive Maintenance, Maintenance, and School-based facilities every four months for the first two years. The third year focuses on supporting the Preventive Maintenance Office. Apprentices are eligible to apply for promotional opportunities starting in their third year. Overtime, mid-shift, and night work may be required based on assignments. A satisfactory rating in at least two out of three work assignment rotations during the first year is required to remain in the program. Additional work days/hours may be required for emergencies, evenings/nights, extended hours, inclement weather, outside normal business hours, overtime, peak seasons, shift work, summer hours, and weekends.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or Equivalency Certificate required.
  • One (1) year custodian experience required.
  • Ability to read and follow operating procedures for all machinery and equipment related to the preventive maintenance program or operation of a school facility.
  • Ability to work from verbal or written instructions (may include blueprints or engineering drawings).
  • Ability to demonstrate progression in learning mechanical/electrical skills.
  • Requires commitment to Apprenticeship Program by demonstrating initiative and willingness to learn.
  • Ability to provide good customer service.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively work and communicate with diverse populations.
  • Ability to employ business technology tools (e.g. E-mail, AACPS Intranet, electronic benefits enrollment tool, Microsoft Office Suite, etc.).
  • Must provide basic hand tools.
  • Upon hire, Introduction to School Facilities Boiler Plant Safety & Procedures Certificate issued by AACPS or equivalent outside course required; or Consideration will be given to candidates who can achieve a passing grade on Introduction to School Facilities Boiler Plant Safety & Procedures Certificate issued by AACPS or equivalent outside course required.
  • Upon hire, Leadership Training or Certificate Course issued by AACPS or equivalent outside course required; or First available after appointment Leadership Training or Certificate Course issued by AACPS or equivalent outside course required.
  • Upon hire, Driver's License (DL) Class C Non-Commercial issued by Maryland or State of Legal Residence (MVA/DMV) required.
  • Proof of a good driving record required.
  • Daily access to reliable transportation.
  • Driving is required to conduct bona fide Board business that is within the scope of employment in this position.

Nice To Haves

  • Technical or Vocational School Beyond High School in a maintenance trade preferred.
  • One (1) year building mechanical equipment service or building operator experience preferred.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities deemed sufficient to prepare the applicant to successfully perform the duties of the position.

Responsibilities

  • Assists in performing preventive maintenance on all types of equipment throughout buildings such as air handling units, roof top units, exhaust fans, cooling towers, periodic changing of filters on/in HVAC equipment, and changing belts.
  • Assists with making minor maintenance repairs and adjustments, such as cleaning clogged plumbing fixtures, replacing electric bulbs, fuses, and ballasts.
  • Assists with opening, closing, and locking buildings and gates for meetings and other evening activities.
  • Assists with monitoring daily building security and responds to emergencies as directed.
  • Assists with assigning and inspecting work of the custodians involved in the cleaning and general upkeep of the school.
  • Assists with HVAC systems to troubleshoot operations of HVAC equipment.
  • Maintains records of completed work electronically and hard copy such as chiller and boiler logs and walk in refrigerators and freezers.
  • Submits utility, generator, and diesel fuel readings electronically.
  • Generates work orders through the Work Management System as needed.
  • Participates in snow removal.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned within the same classification or lower.
