About The Position

The Apprentice HVAC position involves assisting mechanical journeymen in the diagnosis, service, and installation of various HVAC components and refrigeration systems. The role requires adherence to mechanical codes, working in diverse environments including confined spaces and heights, and performing tasks such as brazing, soldering, and assisting with boiler and chilled water systems. The employee may also occasionally supervise other staff.

Requirements

  • Ability to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
  • High School Diploma or general education degree (GED).
  • Must clear all necessary criminal and vehicular background checks.
  • Must possess and maintain a current Oklahoma license for motor vehicles.
  • Must be available for unscheduled, emergency calls.
  • Shall provide a reasonable method of communication during unscheduled emergency situations.
  • Currently licensed and in good standing as a Mechanical Apprentice with the Oklahoma State Department of Health Mechanical Division, City of Oklahoma City, City of Midwest City, and City of Del City.
  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence and memos.
  • Ability to compose and write grammatically correct correspondence and memos.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, schedule form, or blueprint form.
  • Regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear.
  • Frequently required to stand, walk, climb or balance, and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • Occasionally required to sit.
  • Frequently lift and/or move up to or more than 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to or more than 50 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required: close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Nice To Haves

  • Employee will be required to attend a Refrigerant Certification class and apply for refrigerant certification within one (1) year from date of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Become proficient in the application of the International and BOCA Mechanical Codes, and all applicable state and local codes.
  • Regularly work in confined spaces above, below, and at ground level.
  • Regularly work in aerial bucket ladder or cat walk at a height not to exceed 100'.
  • Assist mechanical journeymen in the diagnoses, service, and the installation of condensing units, compressors, unit furnaces, central units, and rooftop units.
  • Assist in the service and maintenance of ice machines, steam cookers, walk in refrigeration units (low & high temp.), and milk boxes.
  • Assist certified technicians in the recovery of refrigerants.
  • Assist mechanical journeymen in the replacement of electric motors, starters, controllers, remote switches, etc.
  • Assist mechanical journeyman in the maintenance, service, and operation of boiler and chilled water systems.
  • Assist in the brazing and soldering of similar and dissimilar metals.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by immediate supervisor or above.
  • Occasionally supervise a varying number of employees in the overall direction, coordination, and completion of tasks as assigned.
