About The Position

Capital City Fire Rescue (CCFR) is offering a 10-month paid Firefighter Apprenticeship Program, providing a direct path to a career in emergency services with no prior experience required. This program aims to select four highly motivated individuals who will receive hands-on training and earn industry-recognized certifications, including Alaska EMT-1 and IFSAC Firefighter I. The program is designed to remove traditional entry barriers, such as the need for college enrollment, relocation, or extensive volunteer service. Upon successful completion, apprentices will be eligible to apply for permanent, full-time positions with CCFR.

Requirements

  • High School graduation or valid GED certificate.
  • Not less than 18 years of age at time of appointment.
  • A valid Driver’s License at time of appointment and for continued employment.
  • Valid Emergency Trauma Technician Certification within four (4) weeks of appointment and for continued employment.
  • Certification as a State of Alaska Emergency Medical Technician I or higher within one year of appointment.
  • Must pass a physical ability test.
  • Must pass all portions of the psychological assessment.
  • A medical evaluation is required for positions assigned to fire scene support when it is a primary duty of the position.

Responsibilities

  • Phase 1: Department Operations & EMT-1 Certification (Weeks 1–12): Intro to operations, communications, driving, PPE, and basic skills; EMT-1 certification via APEC and local protocol training; Shift integration and firefighter fundamentals.
  • Phase 2: EMT-1 Precepting & Hazmat Awareness (Weeks 13–22): Supervised EMT practice, fire behavior, equipment, and hazmat basics.
  • Phase 3: Suppression & Rescue Operations (Weeks 23–40): Interior fire attack, search and rescue, firefighter survival.
  • Phase 4: Hazmat Operations (Weeks 41–42): Focused training on hazardous materials operations.
  • Final Testing & Employment (Weeks 43–44): Competency & Certification, including final skills and physical ability testing, and AFSC/IFSAC certification exams (Firefighter I & Hazmat Ops).
  • Post-Program Employment: Must pass a physical ability test. Hiring based on PAT scores, apprenticeship performance, and number of available positions.
