About The Position

Georgia Power's Network Underground Services (NUS) plays an integral part in Georgia's economy, providing construction & maintenance services for network underground electrical systems across the state. NUS offers highly reliable electric service to High Profile Customers. The Apprentice Cable Splicer (ACS) position is part of the Cable Splicer Development Program (CSDP), an extensive training program combining skills training, classroom training, and on-the-job training. Successful completion of the 3-year CSDP program is required to become a Journeyman Cable Splicer with Georgia Power. Training will cover the installation, splicing, and terminating of various electrical cables. Current vacancies are in Atlanta, Augusta, and Savannah, and flexibility in work locations is essential for progression.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Basic mechanical and electrical aptitude or background.
  • Valid driver's license is required.
  • Must be able to work in enclosed spaces such as manholes, vaults & tunnels where entry requires access by ladders.
  • Must be able to work at heights in lifts, buckets, scaffolds, etc.
  • Ability to take instruction, direction and translate into actions.
  • Able to perform physically demanding activities while working outside in all weather conditions and elements.
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully work in a team environment.
  • Exhibited safe work practices as evidenced by a history of working accident free and injury free.
  • Must CURRENTLY weigh (and maintain body weight) AT or BELOW 270 pounds - fully dressed including steel-toed work boots and hardhat.
  • Must be able to lift and drag equipment weighing 50-pounds or more.
  • Must be able to frequently work in extreme weather conditions throughout the entire year.
  • Must be available for "call out" duties which will require being available and accessible in times of Storm emergencies at least 50% of the times requested, including overnight and out of state travel.
  • Must successfully meet requirements for a Pre-Employment (DOT) physical exam approved by our company physician.
  • Must pass a pre-employment written exam (Construction and Skills Trade test).
  • Must pass a post offer Employment test.

Nice To Haves

  • Minimum of 1 year of work experience in construction, heavy industrial maintenance, utility, military and/or electrical experience is preferred.
  • Experience working outdoors, with heavy equipment/machinery, heavy load rigging/lifting, emergency responders, commercial truck driving, and/or farming is a plus.
  • Candidates who have Network or Distribution underground experience are strongly desired.
  • Candidates who have military experience is a plus.
  • Valid CDL (Commercial Driver’s License) - Class A OR Valid CDL Learners Permit OR If candidate is military - obtain a Georgia CDL Permit Waiver.
  • If candidate currently possess a CDL Permit, candidate must be able to attain a CDL - Class A within 6 months of hire date.
  • Any candidate who holds a current CDL License will require full verification with current & past employers.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with the construction & maintenance of the network underground systems and other hi-rely distribution systems across the state of Georgia.
  • Learn the construction and maintenance activities associated with Network & Hi-rely Distribution systems.
  • Learn operating procedures for all equipment involved in the process, including cranes, lifts, aerial devices, and cable pulling equipment.
  • Work in enclosed spaces such as manholes, vaults & tunnels.
  • Work at heights in lifts, buckets, scaffolds, etc.
  • Safely perform every task while providing a quality product in an efficient manner.
  • Receive training in the installation, splicing and terminating of various electrical cables.
