About The Position

The main responsibility of the Apprentice Apparatus Substation Technician, 4th Period - IBEW is for applying knowledge in power systems apparatus, always under the supervision of a qualified employee. Performs maintenance, testing, troubleshooting, repairs, construction, installation, modifications, dispositions of power system apparatus installed in power plants, substations, switchyards, and any other LUMA dependencies and private entities. Be available for scheduled standby shifts and respond to calls out related to system outage restorations and/or equipment failures. Responsible for the substation activities of a given geographical area, overnight stays, traveling away from home base and assisting other locations. This position is with IBEW Local Union 222 and is required to affiliate with the Union.

Requirements

  • Associate degree with 2 years of directly related experience in substations, protection and control related instruments and software applications, or Technical degree/program or relevant certification/diploma in Electrical Power Technology, Mechanical Technology or other industry recognized, with 3 years of directly related experience in substations, protection and control related instruments and software applications.
  • A Valid Puerto Rico driver’s license Category 9 is required. However, a valid Puerto Rico license in any other category will be accepted with the commitment to obtain the required license within a period of no more than 90 days of employment to be in compliance.
  • Permit to Operate Commercial Vehicle from The Transport and Other Public Services Bureau (NTSP, "Negociado de Transporte y Otros Servicios Públicos de Puerto Rico". If you do not have a heavy-duty category license to obtain the required permit, you must commit to obtain one within 90 days of employment to be in compliance.
  • Driver's Record (DTOP)
  • Candidates must meet all applicable federal requirements, including pre-employment and random testing, medical certification, and driver qualification standards.

Nice To Haves

  • Master Electrician with direct experience working with Utilities is preferred.
  • Experience with substation, related instruments and software applications is preferred.
  • Understanding of company safety practices and procedures is preferred.
  • Familiarity of government and industry standards is preferred.
  • Valid First Aid Certification is preferred.
  • OSHA Certification is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Performs technical work consisting of applying knowledge in power systems.
  • Performs maintenance, conservation, testing, troubleshooting, repairs, installation, modifications, dispositions, construction, and commissioning activities for substation equipment including but not limited to transformers, circuit breakers, capacitor banks, static var compensator (SVC), circuit switchers, disconnect switch (high voltage switch), motor operated disconnect (MOD) switch controller, voltage regulators, surge arresters, battery banks, control cables, wires, grounding mat/ground grid, safety grounds, and other related equipment.
  • Perform power system switching and schedule/hold permits.
  • Operates insulation oil purification equipment.
  • Operates cranes, forklifts, bucket trucks, manlifts or other equipment used to move large objects or materials.
  • Analyzes failures and related records of maintenance.
  • Maintains inspection and test records of maintenance.
  • Records information using the platform available about maintenance activities, including time, location, and material used.
  • Identifies all health, safety and environmental hazards associated with the work performed; develops and implements safety plans to eliminate or mitigate those hazards.
  • Job safety planning, adherence to safe work practices, operating company assigned vehicles are key components to the position.
  • Understands and complies with established maintenance, testing and work standards and all corporate policies, practices, and procedures as well as all legislative regulations that apply to the work performed.
  • Ensures comprehensive, documented job plans exist for all work performed. These job plans include all required tools, test equipment, manpower (including skill level requirements), job steps, hazards/barriers and references to corporate policies, practices, and procedures as well as a realistic estimate of real time job duration.
  • Assists supervisor by providing on the job coaching and mentoring for new employees and apprentices.
  • Identifies improvements to systems/equipment/facilities by completing substation inspections.
  • Performs site related software, programs and drawing interpretation, and related software/firmware updating.
  • Be on a calendar standby rotation for 24/7 system operation support.
  • Completes work assignments without direct supervision and act as on-site employee in charge as required.
  • Takes responsibility for the completion of assigned work, update work in an automated system and ensure the work is of the highest possible quality.
  • Follows all policies and procedures.
  • Performs major storm restoration work and associated drills as assigned.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
