About The Position

The Appraiser (Entry) position involves investigations and data collection/analysis for the valuation of residential, agricultural, and small commercial real properties for tax assessment purposes, serving as the primary contact for the public on these matters. The Appraiser (Journey) position performs the full range of appraisal duties independently, handling residential, agricultural, commercial, industrial, transitional, multi-use, and specialized real properties for tax assessment, and also serves as the primary public contact. The current opening is for a limited-term position, but the resulting eligible list will be used for various types of positions (full-time, part-time, regular, limited-term, extra-help) as vacancies arise.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university, preferably in Business Administration, Public Administration, Economics.
  • Substitution of Experience for Education: High school diploma or GED and four (4) years of relevant experience (accountant, auditor, real property appraiser, building cost estimator, engineer, real estate loan agent, real estate loan underwriter, right-of-way agent, licensed building contractor; or a real estate licensee engaged in buying, selling, leasing, or managing real estate; or an appraiser aide or trainee in an assessor’s office or Board of Equalization property taxes department; or an employee, other than an appraiser, aide, or trainee, of an assessor’s office or Board of Equalization property taxes department, with limitations on qualifying time).
  • Appraiser (Entry): One (1) year of work experience as Appraiser Technician, Aide or equivalent position in an assessor’s office or equivalent experience in real estate appraisal or related field.
  • Appraiser (Journey): Two (2) years of work experience at entry-level or associate-level property appraisal or equivalent experience in real estate appraisal.
  • Temporary Appraiser’s certificate issued by the California State Board of Equalization must be obtained within the first month of employment.
  • Permanent Appraiser’s certificate issued by the California State Board Equalization must be obtained within the first year of employment.
  • Possession of a valid Class C California Driver’s License is required.
  • All licenses, certificates and registrations must be kept current, including completion of continuing education units.

Responsibilities

  • Makes investigations and collects/analyzes data for valuation of real properties to determine value for tax assessment purposes.
  • Serves as primary point of contact with the general public concerning real property tax assessment issues.
  • Performs the full range of appraisal duties within a framework of established procedures (Journey level).
  • Works with only occasional instruction or assistance and performs specialized duties in a highly independent manner (Journey level).
